What Is Surgical Menopause?

From the Menopause and Hormones Articles List

What is surgical menopause? What is surgical menopause?

Menopause occurs when a woman’s ovaries stop producing hormones, the ovaries no longer release eggs, and monthly menstrual periods cease. Surgical menopause is similar, but it occurs when a woman’s ovaries have been surgically removed.

Women generally begin to experience menopause symptoms sometime in her 40's, and full menopause is often reached around the age of 50. Perimenopause describes the years leading to natural menopause. During that time, symptoms can occur as hormone levels decrease and fluctuate. Once full menopause is reached, the ovaries may still produce trace amount of hormones and some women find their menopause symptoms decrease.

Surgical menopause, on the other hand, occurs instantly when the ovaries are removed. Because it occurs immediately, it can cause harsher and more intense symptoms. Since estrogen is critical for overall health, especially the younger you are, surgical menopause may cause some unexpected health issues as well.

If you are facing a bilateral oophorectomy for non-cancerous issues, it is a good idea to seek a second opinion to be sure this surgery is right for you and the oophorectomy health risks are justified. If at all possible, it can best for your overall physical, mental, emotional, and sexual health to avoid surgical menopause.

If you have had or must have your ovaries removed, talk to your doctor about hormone replacement therapy (HRT). HRT may minimize and even eliminate many of the common menopause symptoms and health risks you may be facing.
