20 Migraine Symptoms You Should Know

From the Fitness & Wellness After Hysterectomy Articles List

What are some signs that could let me know I am getting or have a migraine so I can treat it quickly and effectively? What are some signs that could let me know I am getting or have a migraine so I can treat it quickly and effectively?

Migraines can cause severe, debilitating pain, so being able to identify a migraine in its earliest stages can be essential. Knowing a migraine is coming can also let you take some preventive steps and use abortive medications more quickly.

To help you learn your warning signs, it’s important to keep a symptom diary. You should be aware of your environment and daily activities, and note anything unusual that occurs which might trigger a migraine. For instance, if you miss some sleep, change your diet, or go through a stressful experience, you should be on the alert for warning signs of a possible migraine.

Below is a list of symptoms which could indicate you either have a migraine or one is on its way. Knowing which of these symptoms may be in indicator for you can help you more quickly and effectively treat an impending migraine.

Migraine Symptoms

  • Aura
  • Yawning
  • Cravings
  • Neck pain
  • Sensitivity to light, noise, and smell
  • Frequent urination
  • Painful or blurry eyes
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Headache worsens with activity
  • Speech difficulty
  • Body weakness on one side
  • Dizziness or lightheaded
  • Mood swings
  • Watery eyes
  • Stuffy nose
  • Feeling cold / chills
  • Nausea and vomiting and/or diarrhea
  • Irritable
  • Confusion
  • Severe headache
Because many symptoms of a migraine can also be the result of other health or life style issues, it is also important that you stay consistent with your symptom diary. For example, PMS can cause cravings and mood swings. Allergy season can bring on a stuffy nose, watery eyes, and sinus headache. A severe headache, one sided body weakness, trouble speaking, and blurry vision could indicate you are having a stroke which requires immediate and correct medical attention.

Know your body and have a knowledgeable medical team so you can more accurately and quickly identify a migraine versus other conditions. If you are ever unsure, err on the side of caution and seek medical treatment immediately.
