Sex before Hysterectomy?

From the Pre-Op Hysterectomy Articles List

Is it okay to have intercourse the night or morning before my hysterectomy?

There is no black and white answer regarding whether or not you can have intercourse shortly before your hysterectomy. HysterSisters have reported a variety of instructions given by their surgeons. It may depend on your surgeon and your particular situation as to what is allowed for you.

Intercourse can introduce bacteria to the vagina, so some HysterSisters have been told to avoid sex for a day or two prior to their hysterectomy. In other cases, a longer time frame has been given for abstaining. Sometimes, a specific medical douche or vaginal cleanse may be required prior to a hysterectomy. In those cases, sex may be allowed until you need to shower or use those products, whether it be the day before or the morning of surgery.

Other doctors place no restrictions on intercourse prior to a hysterectomy. When intercourse is allowed, many do recommend you use some type protection to prevent pregnancy, and some specifically require a condom to minimize infection risks. If you do have intercourse, you should also be sure to shower afterward while keeping in mind any personal hygiene restrictions you may have been given as part of your pre-op instructions.

Whether intercourse is discouraged or not, the goal is your safety. It is important for you to follow whatever instructions your surgeon gives you regarding intercourse before your hysterectomy. If your doctor doesn’t state when you should stop having intercourse prior to your hysterectomy, be sure to ask so you can stay as safe as possible.
