Vaginal Estrogen for Vaginal Atrophy

From the Menopause and Hormones Articles List

Manage vaginal atrophy with estrogen vaginallyCan vaginal estrogen be helpful for treating vaginal atrophy?

Vaginal atrophy is one of the issues which can plague women during menopause. Decreased levels of estrogen can cause the vaginal tissues to become thin, dry, and inflamed. As a result, you can experience symptoms which may include itching, burning, painful intercourse, and urination concerns.

Vaginal estrogen is one of the options you can consider for treating vaginal atrophy. It can be applied directly to the area, offering direct relief in lower doses. As only a small amount reaches the blood stream, this type of estrogen may be an option even for those who are unable to use a systemic form of estrogen.

Vaginal estrogen comes in several different forms: suppositories, creams, rings, and pills. Each option has its own advantages and disadvantages, and possible side effects should be discussed with your doctor.

Vaginal Suppositories

Vaginal suppositories are created by a compounding pharmacy especially for you. You and your doctor can determine the type of estrogen and dose which may be right for you.

Vaginal Creams

Vaginal creams can either be made specifically for you by a compounding pharmacist, or you can choose a ready made version, Premarin. Either option can be an effective choice which is applied to the inside of the vagina with an applicator. The dose can either be adjusted by the compounding pharmacist or by how much and how often the cream is used.

Vaginal Rings

Vaginal rings can provide either localized or systemic estrogen, depending on which you choose. One benefit of a ring is that you do not need to remember to apply it regularly since each lasts for approximately three months.

Vaginal Pills

Vaginal pills are inserted into the vagina where they offer localized estrogen. The dose can be adjusted by how often they are used.
