Estrace Cream | What Is It?

From the Menopause and Hormones Articles List

Woman using estrace for vaginal atrophyI’m dealing with vaginal atrophy. What options do I have for treating the symptoms?

Are you dealing with vaginal dryness or vaginal atrophy? If so, Estrace Cream is an option that might help relieve your symptoms.

Estrogen helps the vagina produce a thin layer of moisture that keeps the tissues healthy and elastic. When estrogen levels drop during menopause, the vaginal tissues can become dry, thin, and less elastic. They can even crack and tear, causing discomfort and pain.

Symptoms of vaginal dryness include dryness, itching, and burning. Left untreated, vaginal dryness can progress to vaginal atrophy and be quite painful and uncomfortable. The vaginal tissues can become inflamed and less resistant to infection.

One of your options for treating moderate to severe symptoms of vaginal dryness and vaginal atrophy is applying a transdermal estrogen product. Estrace cream (estradiol vaginal cream) is one of those options. It is a bio-identical estradiol created from a plant source and can be applied directly to the vaginal tissues.

Because Estrace Cream is applied directly to the affected tissues, only a low dose is needed to relieve symptoms and help restore the vaginal tissues. The lower dose and topical absorption can also help minimize side effects. The amount you will need and how often you will need to apply it can depend on the extent of your initial symptoms. As the tissues heal, you may be able to use less cream less often.

If vaginal dryness is making you feel uncomfortable and affecting intimacy with your spouse, ask your doctor if Estrace Cream may be right for you. You and your doctor can discuss the pros and cons to determine if this vaginal estrogen product may be right for you.
