What are some tips for creating and maintaining a regular exercise program?
You know you need to exercise regularly, so you’re working to create an exercise routine. You’ve been talking to friends, searching the internet, and researching gyms.
You now have some ideas of what you want to do and when you’ll do it. You've learned that sticking to a regular exercise program is going to take some time and effort, but the benefits will be well worth it.
To help you be more successful for your journey, here are some do’s and don’ts that you can implement into your exercise routine. Have fun!
DO THIS:
- Talk to your doctor first
- Drink plenty of water during your routine
- Set realistic goals
- Start small
- Gradually increase your exercise level
- Pace yourself
- Mix it up
- Make it interesting
- Add variety
- Include aerobics
- Add stretching exercises
- Include resistance training
- Exercise all the major parts of the body
- Consider working with a trainer
- Wear appropriate clothes
- Consider working out with a friend or in a group
- Stop if something hurts and talk to your doctor
- Eat a healthy diet
- Keep an exercise diary
- Reward yourself
NOT THAT:
- Don’t over-exercise any single body part
- Don’t overestimate your abilities
- Don’t overdo it
- Don’t try anything risky without expert advise
- Don’t exercise for too long at a time
- Don’t stick to only one type of exercise
- Don’t forget to breathe
- Don’t skimp on workout shoes
- Don’t lift too much
- Don’t forget to monitor your posture
- Don’t exercise only on the weekends
- Don’t skimp on sleep
- Don’t compare yourself with others
- Don’t forget to warm up
- Don’t skip cool down exercises
- Don’t give up
