Hard Time Coping with Loss of Fertility after Hysterectomy for Cancer

From the GYN Cancer Articles List

Woman sad after loss of fertilityI recently had a hysterectomy due to a cancer diagnosis. They took more away from me than just body parts. They took away my hope, my being, and my will to live, but no one understands. I am officially broken. Is there any hope for me?

Losing your fertility is difficult enough when it's your choice, but it's even harder when the choice is made for you. And you're correct, unless someone’s been through it, they can't truly know or understand.

Many ladies have walked in your shoes and felt these same emotions. They struggle to be happy for family and friends who are expecting. The mere sight of a pregnant woman at the mall sends them to the restroom in tears. They feel useless and sad, wanting only to hide away somewhere and grieve.

Right now you’re mentally and physically exhausted, and you are still very early in your hysterectomy recovery. Your body and mind are healing and changing, adjusting to their new normal. Add to that the looming possibility of additional treatments for gynecologic cancer and all that entails, and it’s no wonder you feel this way. You're running on empty and even small things can seem overwhelming.

Please don't hesitate to discuss your feelings with your doctor. There are interventions which can help you through this period of loss. Some ladies find antidepressants or anxiety medications helpful in balancing their emotions so they are able to better cope with everything. Medication may not be necessary forever, just long enough to get you back on steady ground. There's also counseling, support groups, prayer, or meditation.

The key is not to be reluctant in reaching out to others. Those who understand are out there and can help. Your HysterSisters in the Cancer Concerns Forum are here to welcome and comfort you. They'll share both information and personal experiences with you. This is a difficult time, but you are not alone.
