TAH/BSO - one week post op-my castle story

From the Abdominal Hysterectomy Stories Articles List

Hi ladies, first of all to all of the ladies in waiting, the waiting truly is the hardest part!

My story starts on Aug. 16, 2002. I had to be at the hospital at 7:30 for 10:00a.m. surgery. Went to outpatient surgery to be officially admitted. Then had to wait 2hrs. because dr. had emergency c-section and was running behind. But our wonderful pastor showed up to pray with us(DHand I) and he sat and chatted with us also. So that helped alot. At about 9:30 they finally called me into pre-op where they started IV, asked more questions that they had already asked, and the "A" man came in. I asked if I could have an epidural for post op pain, but he said he really didn't like to do that because he considers it invasive. So no epidural. Buuummmer! He gave me some pepcid to help with nausea after and said normally he would give me a sedative but that I didn't seem to need one. I agreed, I felt so calm and at peace with the whole thing. Well, finally at about 11:15 they came to take me to the OR. The "A" man gave me the sleepy stuff and that's the last thing I remember. I don't even remember the recovery room, except for moaning because I was in pain at that time. But don't be scared. Although I was in pain I was also very sleepy so I don't remember the pain at all! The next thing I remember was my DH wonderful face. That was at about 4:00p.m. The next thing I remember was my sister visiting at about 7:00p.m and then I was out the rest of the night. I did have some pain because I had the nurse from hell the very first night. My husband had a confrontation with her because he could clearly see I was in pain and although it was time for my next pain shot she didn't want to give it to me until I asked for it. He was soooo mad. He told her by then I would be in too much pain. So finally she gave it to me. And all through the night she would only give to me when I rang for her and then it took her a good 20min. to give it to me. But even then it wasn't too bad. I was able to sleep and in the morning(Sat) I couldn't wait to get out of bed because I was so stiff. So out of bed I went and for a little walk I went. Didn't hurt too bad at all. After that walk I started to feel the rumbling in my tummy but no passing of the gas until Sun. morning. They gave me a suppository to help with the gas and to soften my bowels. It worked from Sunday on I have had a bowel movement atleast once a day if not more. Sunday night they brought me my first real meal and I had my first hot flash. Hot flashes are no fun at all!!! So the nurse started me on my first hormone pills and nothing else since. I came home on Monday the 19th at about 2p.m. Coming home actually was the hardest part for me because everything at home is so low it was hard to get up and down. But by night time I was getting the hang of it. I took more pain pills at home than I did in the hospital. My bladder is the other hardest part. I haven't had much pain the med. works really well, but my bladder is driving me batty. I'm calling the DR in about 2hrs. to talk to him about it. Well, today is one week and everyday I feel just a little better and I'm excited that now all of this is behind me and everyday I'll be better and don't have to have all the pain and suffering I had before. This truly is the best thing I could have done for me. I already notice a difference in my body. Thanks to all of you for your prayers and encouraging words. Without the Lord, my DH, and all of my wonderful hystersisters this definitely would not have been as uneventful as it was. By the way the Dr. also punctured a main blood vessel in my bladder and I lost a lot of blood, but again God was taking care of me. Also the hot tea really does help with the gas and bowels after surgery.
