Eat This - Not That: Getting Some SleepIt seems inevitable. Night falls and your stomach starts growling. Putting on your pjs seems to trigger the munchies. Going to bed hungry can keep you awake, so that’s not a good option. But if you choose to snack on the wrong thing at bed time, it could keep you from sleeping.

There are some foods which can help you sleep better and others which are more likely to keep you awake. Knowing which are which can let you satisfy your hunger without keeping you awake all night. Good choices include those high in magnesium or tryptophan and low in fat. You should also try to mix a protein and a carb and watch your portion sizes.

EAT THIS:

  • Turkey
  • Warm milk
  • Fortified cereal
  • Peanut butter or almond butter
  • Fruit, especially cherries, banana, or kiwi
  • Soy
  • Chamomile, Valerian, and other herbal teas
  • Whole wheat bread
  • Crackers with cheese
  • Nuts
  • Spinach
  • Oatmeal
  • Popcorn – without the salt and butter
  • Low-fat yogurt


NOT THAT:

  • Large meal of any kind
  • Anything greasy
  • High-fat foods
  • Alcohol
  • Caffeinated drinks including coffee, tea, and soda
  • Sugar
  • Spices
  • Beans and other gas inducing foods
  • Chocolate
  • Highly acidic foods
  • Pizza
  • Tomato based dishes
  • Heartburn inducing foods
