Managing Menopause Migraines

Are you struggling with migraines that seem to have no rhyme or reason? Are your migraines associated with menopause? There is definitely no easy answer to this one.
The Logic of Menopause Migraines
Its true - migraines are typically associated with fluctuating hormone levels of our menstrual cycles. Migraines in women typically begin before the age of 40, long before menopause.
Therefore - The logic: It stands to reason that along with menopause and the challenges of hormone levels changing, migraines may continue to be your companion.
You may have menopause related migraines
- If your migraine pattern changes with menopause.
- If you have migraine headaches along with other menopause symptoms.
- If you have migraine headaches when using or stopping HRT.
Treat Your Migraines
Treating hormonal migraines can include working with your doctor to balance your hormones, but it also involves avoiding typical triggers--some of which can also be menopause symptoms:
- fatigue
- anxiety
- food issues
Know your Migraine Triggers
Foods - Cheese, cured meats, dried fruits, nuts, citrus fruit, chocolate, salty foods
Additives- MSG, aspartame, and nitrites or nitrates
Missing meals/eating late
Dehydration
Caffeine
Noise
Light - Bright light, sunlight, flashing lights, strobes, TV or movie screens
Medications
Menstrual cycle/hormones
Stress
Weather changes
Changes in sleep
Alcohol
Scents - including perfumes or scented candles
Exercise
And don't forget these migraine busters
Eat healthy
Exercise regularly
Get adequate sleep
Manage your personal stresses
Work with your doctor to balance your hormone replacement therapy
Use migraine medications as prescribed
