What to Take to the Hospital for Hysterectomy

From the Pre-Op Hysterectomy Articles List

What to Take to the Hospital for Hysterectomy I’m getting ready for my surgery. What do I need to bring with me to the hospital?

Deciding what to bring to the hospital for your hysterectomy can be a bit tricky. You want to make sure you have all the essentials, but you don't want to wheel in a large, heavy suitcase. The key is to pack light, pack easy, sticking strictly to the bare necessities. Here are a few things the HysterSisters suggest:

To Bring

  • Tummy pillow (buy yours at the HysterSisters store)
  • Backscratcher
  • Lip balm
  • Slippers
  • Night shirt (preferably button up, not pullover)
  • Oversize cotton panties
  • Pads
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Hair brush
  • Facial cleanser
  • Deodorant
  • Lightweight cotton robe
  • Lotion
  • Ponytail holder
  • Calling card or cell phone
  • Prescriptions (check with staff on restrictions)

Not to Bring

  • Money or valuables
  • Jewelry
  • Anything more than a small overnight bag can comfortably hold

Additional Ideas

  • Take notes
  • Listen when your doctor speaks
  • Have someone with you for discharge instructions
  • Say "please" and "thank you"
  • Ask for copies of your file
  • Be nice to the hospital staff
  • Be proactive with your care
  • Let staff know your needs
  • Make friends with kitchen staff
  • Write thank you notes to your medical staff
