Itching after Hysterectomy

From the Hysterectomy Recovery Articles List

woman with itching skin after hysterectomyI have been itching all over since my hysterectomy. My ears, my head, my legs and my incision. Does it have something to do with the surgery? How do I treat this?

Many things can contribute to itchy skin after a hysterectomy. Along with normal post-op surgery itches, you might be experiencing a change in hormone levels. Hormone surges cause hot flashes, which can also feel like itching. Any pain medications (especially containing codeine) that you are taking can also cause itching. That’s a lot of itching!

Here are some suggestions to help ease the itching:
  • Lather lotions all over your body.

  • If cleared by your doctor, take a bath in Aveeno.

  • Take Benadryl (if approved by your doctor).

If the itching continues, check with your physician for other recommendations.
