Brigham and Women's Hospital is one the largest teaching hospitals of Harvard Medical School and a founder of Partners Health Care. Our hospital is a world pioneer in the use of computer-assisted surgery (robotic surgery) in gynecology and high-specialty gynecologic areas such as fertility surgery and cancer surgery, with thousands of successful procedures performed since 2006. Dr. Gargiulo is the medical director of the Center for Robotic Surgery of Brigham and Women's Hospital and a senior associate in the Center for Infertility and Reproductive Surgery. Dr. Gargiulo's surgical practice focuses on complex conservative (myomectomy) or definitive (hysterectomy) surgery for uterine fibroids in women before the onset of menopause. Through extensive use of pre-operative imaging for case selection and preparation, this team has been able to maintain a continuous record of never resorting to open surgery for these conditions since 1998. Our philosophy is that we will always work with patients to deliver the type of minimally invasive surgery that is medically indicated, but that also meets the individual patient's desires and expectations. We are strong proponents of post-reproductive myomectomy as an alternative to hysterectomy for women who are opposed to losing their uterus. We exclusively perform contained uterine tissue extraction in endoscopic bags, to avoid tissue dispersion.
