Bad Pap? No Cervix - unbelievable!!!!
Happy Thanksgiving to all.
My TAH was six months ago and I did not keep my cervix . After my regular annual exam my Doctor said my pap came back bad. She has ordered me in for a colposcopy and when I questioned the need for this I was told there is still a risk of vaginal cancer especially around the vaginal cuff.
Has anyone experienced this? What was the outcome?
I'm not really concerned but I do question the need for this, I have had several bad paps through the years and I know the drill. I really don't worry unnecessarily but I question the necessity of poking around anymore than necessaryand the possibility of creating problems around the vaginal cuff. I am scheduled to go in next week and will get it done but I have talked to several women who have questioned the need.
Just looking for any input. Thanks

Bad Pap? No Cervix - unbelievable!!!!
If I remember correctly, it is called a vaginal swab. My physician recommended that I have one done every other year to check for vaginal cancer.
Good luck! I hope everything comes out ok next week.

Bad Pap? No Cervix - unbelievable!!!!
I also had a bad pap 6 months after my hysterectomy, what a surprise, How stupid of me to think everything would be alright since I had a hysterectomy, had a coposcopy, biopsy showed moderate dysplasia, Had a laser ablation on Nov.16th. I had myself so prepared that I was going to be in pain, because of everything I read, needless worry, just some very mild cramping, and I felt wonderful, even had entire family over today for Thanksgiving dinner. Either I have a high pain tolerence or a very good gyn./onc. lol God Bless and I hope everything turns out ok.

i'm sorry to hear you had an abnormal pap and now need further testing. i know it can be scary.
do you know specifically what the pap test results were? that will be helpful for you to know. and, did the doctor do an hpv test as well? i'm not sure why you had the hysterectomy, but as your past history included abnormal paps, it's very good to hear that you continued your paps after the hysterectomy. just as you can get cervical dysplasia, you can get vaginal dysplasia as well. and, yes, just as you can get cervical cancer, you can get vaginal cancer. it's hpv that causes cervical dysplasia/cancer, and once you've got hpv, it doesn't go away, though it can become 'dormant'. medical science doesn't yet know what makes it dormant or re-activated.
i hope that you are seeing a gynecological oncologist as they're the experts in this field.
i had vain1 after my hysterectomy which was for recurring dysplasia, and since it was mild dysplasia, my gyn/oncologist and i watched and waited with colposcopies and biopsies, and after a year, it seems to be gone!
a colposcopy doesn't cause any problems....it's just a scope with which the doctor can examine the vagina to check for abnormalities. if the doctor sees abnormalities, he/she will take biopsies to determine what's what.
you may want to visit the 'cancer concerns' forum here on hystersisters.com where there are others who have gone through similar experiences.
wishing you the best.
