Take a CD player
Hi all,
I can't tell you how much my CD player and my favorite relaxing CD's helped me out.
The castle is very busy, even at night there are lots of strange noises and make it hard to stay asleep.
My DH brought up my CD player and a good set of earphones and some "Moonlight sonata and Claire de lune" type music and it was wonderful - I was sleeping through everything. The nurses and therapists would have to lift up my earphones to get my attention and wake me up for vitals and inhalation therapies (asthma).
Anyway, Good luck to all who are going in, I am 11 days post op now after a SAH/BSO. I have been following the guidelines to a fault and am feeling wonderful. I hope you all heal as well as I appear to be so far.
Kay

Take a CD player
That sounds very soothing! I brought my cd player, planning to plug it in rather than use batteries which never seem to last long enough, but then the plug was in a really awkward spot and I never did use it!

Take a CD player
Thanks for the suggestion. I sleep with a fan on year round, so maybe a CD player and some music will be enough to get some sleep.

Take a CD player
I was in the hospital in December for 3 nights - so I agree! I have my MP3 player already loaded up with my most calming music, I plan on also using it while I'm waiting pre-surgery. It's nice and small and holds 5 - 6 hours of music.

Take a CD player
How funny! I was just loading up some of my CD's to take with me! I've found a couple of great ones at Target. One is a Native American Flute and the other is a very mellow Caribbean Steel Drum.... I also have one of those 'noise makers' for at home that has summer rain, crickets, etc on it. It cost about $10 and has been worth every cent!
Happy Napping!

whatever works
Hi Kay and Sisters!
I thought I'd pop on here and list what worked for me to keep out all of the "castle noise" so I could get some good shut eye. I took some ear plugs! Yep, and they worked quite well. I had the ear plugs that were "squishy". You mash them in your fingers, insert into ear canal, and then they re-expand for a perfect fit. I'm one of those people that need lots of QUIET to sleep and my ear plugs were the most valuable and helpful things I took to the castle with me.
The nurses would have to touch me to wake me. I could still faintly hear the IV alarms when they would go off, but most everything else was muffled out enough that I could get a couple hrs. of much needed zzz's at a time.
Have a great day!

Take a CD player
I totatally agree, I brought my cd walkman and plenty of batteries and listened non stop for 3 days, it was relaxing and helped me to not stress or move around to much. I didn't bring magazines or books, couldn't consintrate on them if I wanted too. I had burned all my cds in case some went missing if you know what I mean

Take a CD player
Hi Ladies,
Just a small warning, don't take anything valuable to the hospital (expensive CD players, laptop computers, jewelry, etc.) unless you don't mind having to replace them. Things have a way of sprouting legs and walking off in hospitals. You can't always know who is wandering in and out of rooms - such as other patients, visitors, janitors, maintenance workers, and even the health care staff. Not everyone is trustworthy, and while you're out of the room walking the halls or in the bathroom, your valuables may be taking a walk of their own.
Best wishes and s,
Lisa

Or a DVD player?
My castle stay was considerably enhanced by a portable DVD player, which I picked up pre-surgery using a Xmas gift certicate and a few of my own hard-earned shekels.
It was awesome!! In between walks and nurse checks etc., I was able to escape into my own private movie theatre. This was especially appreciated since I was in a four-bed ward and there wasn't a lot of personal privacy.
I enjoyed it immensely and it also elicited comment from a couple of my roommates.
I checked with the hospital beforehand to ensure it could be used and I also found a secure "hiding place" for it when I was not watching it. Since it isn't much bigger than a paperback, it was easy to conceal.
Keep well,
