Scheduled for vaginal hysterectomy 7/1/10..starting to get nervous
Hi Ladies,
My name is Teresa, I am 39 and preparing for a vaginal hysterectomy. I've spoken to 2 friends who've had hysterectomies in the past. One is in her 50's never had children and had a vaginal hyst. The other has 4 kids and had a vaginal hyst. Both give different opinions on how their recovery went. What can I expect when I get home after surgery. My doctor told me that I will be in the hospital for 1 day. Would it be helpful to have a belly support band considering my abdomen will not be cut? How about a belly pillow? I've read that bowel movements can be difficult, do you have any advice on that? I've read articles on this site as well as others, but I'd like to hear from other "sisters" who've had a vaginal hydterectomy. Any info or suggestions you can pass on would be very helpful. I think I'm starting to lose sleep over this and I know that's not good.

Re: Scheduled for vaginal hysterectomy 7/1/10..starting to get nervous
Well, I can't tell you what it's like, but I can relate. My total laprascopic hysterectomy with BSO is this Friday and I am really getting nervous too. Had my preop appt. today and that made it worse.
Good luck --

I was scheduled for vaginal hyst on may 4 then turn out in the middle of surgery to have to be abdominal hyst. My recovery was pretty good, I am 35 and have 3 boys, I was home in 3 days and not that much pain. I went back to work on very light duty 11 days after surgery. Make sure to take it easy but walk

Christybell, I'm glad to hear that you are doing well after surgery. Do you mind me asking what happened during surgery that it had to be abdominal after all?
50OUT...I'll be thinking about you on Friday, I hope all goes well. When you get to feeling better after surgery let us know how you are.
Thanks for the contact ladies I appreciate it.
Teresa

Re: Scheduled for vaginal hysterectomy 7/1/10..starting to get nervous
teresa - i can tell you my experience - i am 56 and post menopausal - had a robotic hyst on 3/26 - they were able to remove everything vaginally. i have never had children and the doc was not sure she could do it that way - but in the end she did. best i can describe it is that for a few weeks afterward it felt like there was a badly placed tampon there, not painful but just aware of it. did not need pain meds after day 3 - was sore with coughing or sneezing but not extremely so. as for constipation start the stool softeners immediately and drink lots of liquids. walk as much as possible. took me almost 5 weeks to the day to get back to regular for me - feel that some of the issues i was having before the surgery may have been due to the really large ovarian cyst and enlarged uterus cause after, instead of going regularly it seemed my body would hold on to it forever. miralax was also my friend - i would discuss with your doctor what regimen he/she recommends so you can prepare in advance.

Laurarose
Thanks for your honest input. I already sprinkle miralax into my coffee occasionally. Like you said I wonder if the enlarged uterus isn't causing other complications besides pressure on my bladder. I have moments when I can't wait to have the surgery to aleviate the different problems I've been having, but then I start to worry about pain and discomfort after surgery. I'll have tons of questions for my doc on the 30th at my pre-op visit that's for sure.

Re: Scheduled for vaginal hysterectomy 7/1/10..starting to get nervous
I had a vag hyst (TVH) and it was so much easier than I expected. I'm post menopausal, no kids. I never needed narcs at home, took Aleve for 3 wks for total pain control. I had no vaginal pain, just cramping and tugging sensations. I felt guilty people offered me so much help when I felt fine. I was never constipated, just the opposite, but had a day of gas pains. I was scared before but it all went well. Hope yours goes well, too.

Re: Scheduled for vaginal hysterectomy 7/1/10..starting to get nervous
I had LAVH/BSO on March 5th and I found the recovery pretty easy. I didn't get a belly band. My favorite thing was my body pillow for sleeping. this allowed me to sleep on my side easier. Granny panties for the swollen belly. I took milk of magnesium for help with BMs. I was up to traveling 9 hours in a car 6 days post op (of course with doctor's approval and several do's and don'ts). Spent a week watching my son's college team play baseball. When we got home I was really tired by all went well.
I'm so glad I had my surgery.

I am also scheduled on 7/1 and I am starting to get nervous as well. I am praying this will be my cure. I am only 25 and never thought I would be in this position. My prayers will be with you on "OUR" day.
