What if your period starts before surgery?

I feel kind of naive for asking this question, but it occurred to me the other day and I haven't been able to see my doc to ask him about this yet.

If your period starts and you're still flowing the day of surgery, will the surgery still be done? I am so unpredictable these days that even though it's due in a few days, I never know when it will stop and start again.

Also, if you have a complete hysterectomy, is there any post op bleeding to worry about?

What if your period starts before surgery?

I was bleeding the day of surgery. It is not a problem, they just give you a pad to wear before you go into surgery.
Yes, there will be some bleeding after sugery, and then it will turn into a brownish discharge. I had a TVH 7 weeks ago, the discharge ended for me about week 4/5.
Good luck with your surgery.

What if your period starts before surgery?

Yeah, I woke up bleeding pretty heavily the morning of surgery! I was bummed, but no one at the hospital seemed concerned!

What if your period starts before surgery?

I started my period on a Tuesday and had my surgery two days later. They gave me a pad to wear and those fancy mesh hospital panties (smile). When I woke up from sugery...not to be gross but I had a small spot of dried brown blood. When they took the catherer out and I went to the bathroom I had some blood in my urine. That was the only bleeding that I experienced during my TAH.

What if your period starts before surgery?

I am similar to HysterHarley. I was bleeding for 12 days prior to surgery, went to the OR with mesh panties and pad, only used two pads postop and have absolutely no bleeding since, so I have a big stock of pads that I will have to figure out what to do with.

What if your period starts before surgery?

I was having the heaviest day of my period the day of my surgery. I knew that that would be the case beforehand so I asked my doctor if I could wear a tampon. She said yes, and wrote down that it was there and needed to be removed during surgery. Of course I followed up after to make sure that it was done.

What if your period starts before surgery?

I had been bleeding pretty much all the time for months before surgery, the day I went to pre-register at the hospital I was gushing and flowing right through doubled up night time pads, I thanked God that I had on a long black jacket because it ran through on the butt of my jeans. I just remember it was that exact moment that I was no longer affraid to have surgery, I was then excited that would never happen to me again! When I told the nurse that I was bleeding the morning of my surgery, she just gave me a pad to sit on and told me not to worry about it. My hyster was abdominal and I only spotted a few drops the day of surgery and nothing at all after that.

I was worried about that too. But thankfully it ended today and my surgery is in 11 days.

What if your period starts before surgery?

Glad somebody asked. I am skipping periods and thought to myself, I'll probably start the day before!
