Itchy after hysterectomy?

I have been bothered with sporadic itching since the day of my surgery. It's all over my body, from my scalp to my toes. Thankfully, not all at once but all over my body. I'm itchy as heck!! I've tried moisturizing my skin but that's not helping.

Could this be hormonal or due to the meds used during my surgery? Was anyone else bothered with itching after their surgery? If so, how long did it last?

Re: Itchy after hysterectomy?

You've had quite a few meds, and it's always possible it's a reaction to one of those. Takes a while for all of that to get worked out of your system.

Re: Itchy after hysterectomy?

I had standing orders in the hospital for benadryl because my itchies were so bad. I think it was a reaction to one of the meds, my allergies, and my sesitive skin verses the hospital sheets!

Now that I'm thinking about it...on day 15 post TAH/BSO...my itchies, other than my belly, are much better.

Good luck!

Re: Itchy after hysterectomy?

I got the itchies in the hospital due to the morphine and was given Benedryl. Other pain killers may do the same thing...it's common side effect.

Re: Itchy after hysterectomy?

I had itchies for a couple days after my surgery. The anesthesiologist said it was because of one of the meds they gave me in my epidural to help block the pain.

Re: Itchy after hysterectomy?

me too! I've been taking otc non drowsy antihystamines (generic zyrtec) & the judicious use of ice packs on the itchy areas. Also good for warm or hot flashes! fingers crossed that it'll go away eventually!

Re: Itchy after hysterectomy?

I got the ichies as well and was told that it was due to the morphine....as common side effect. I was given some benadryl and was fine.

I hope you get to feeling better.
