Upcoming hysterectomy 8/31: Coming home with catheter?

My doctor has told me that following my hysterectomy I'll come home with a catheter for a week, and then return to the hospital to see if I can pee on my own.

But, everything I've read, women are talking about having it removed usually within 24 hours, and surely before leaving the hospital. Have any of you ladies had to wear a catheter home? I'm just looking for tips to make it easier/more comfortable if that's even possible.
