LSH-What is prolapse and does it happen often with LSH?

I'm scheduled for a LSH on 5/19 and I keep reading things on the sight about "prolapse" and LSH.

Can someone please educate me on what the risks are here with thus type of hysterectomy and prolapse? My doctor didn't indicate that there was anything for me to worry about regarding this topic but reading the sight is making me a little nervous.

Anything you can share would help me feel better. Not even sure what a prolapse is- sorry to be so naive.

I had my pre-op yesterday and left the office feeling very optimistic and ready to go! My husband and I are very confident in our surgeon's abilities in taking care of me and making the right decisions about my care.
Thanks for clarifying!

R1mccutie -

There are various types of prolapses:
Uterine where the uterus is no longer properly supported and it descends into and sometimes all the way through the vagina.
Cystocele is where the bladder protudes into the vagina
Rectocele is where the large intestine protrudes into the vagina.
There can be vaginal vault prolapses where after a hysterectomy the vagina would collapse into itself.

I don't have statistics on prolapse. It is something that every woman runs the risk of regardless of hysterectomy or not.

Some Drs believe that by leaving the cervix that it helps support everything more and decreases prolapse risks. Drs generally use the ligaments that supported the uterus to support the vagina with or without the cervix.

Part of what can help diminish the chances of prolapses are pelvic floor exercises such as Kegel exercises.

Re: LSH-What is prolapse and does it happen often with LSH?

I am also concerned about experiencing a prolapse. I spoke to my doctor about it and he said that I didn't have anything to worry about. He said with three c- sections my bladder didn't drop with the pushing and pulling of a woman who had a natural childbirth. Therefore, my bladder will be fine. Also, my cervix will not be removed so it should provide additional support. I can only pray that God will guide me through the surgery and beyond.
