Hello ladies! So thankful for a place like this to hear everyone's stories and be encouraged that I'm not alone. This is not a surgery that you hear talked about among a group of friends very often, so it's hard to know if what I'm feeling is "normal" or not.
I'm scheduled for a hysterectomy and removing one ovary on Tuesday, September 19th. It will be laparoscopic and outpatient. I'm 53 and have never had surgery that required anesthesia so that's probably what has me most anxious. Don't know how I will respond to that.
I've always had painful heavy periods and recently went about 7 weeks without stopping .... that's what sent me to the doctor. They found thickened lining of my uterus and fibroid and a complex cyst on one of my ovaries with a slightly elevated CA-125 level (cancer marker)...though they're not awfully worried about that.
Doc gave me lots of different options for handling both issues - cyst and bleeding, and I went for hysterectomy, 1 ovary removal and leaving the other so that I can hopefully continue to ease into menopause.
Looking forward to getting on the other side of all this!! Prayers to all for great outcomes!

I still don't understand how to get around this site. I wish I did as I would like to feel better before my surgery and also be able to ask questions and help others after. Is there somewhere that tells you where to go and how to find out if ppl have given me any advice as of now? Sorry I feel stupid asking this question. But I am still lost.

Hi Digirati99,
Here is the link to the Abbreviations list.
Gas pain and constipation are common issues immediately post op. I have sluggish bowels at the best of times, so I began to prepare for my first BM a week before my surgery. I ate lighter, avoided red meat and anything else that makes me gassy or I find difficult to digest... cheese, lettuce, broccoli, etc. I also drank lots of water so that I would be well hydrated; also this makes it easier for them to start the IV.

I hope this helps!

Hi jese222,
Here is a link to the Site Tutorial.
You will receive email notifications whenever someone responds to a thread that you've posted on. For a thread such as this one (The Pre-Op Chat), there are lots of ladies posting so you will need to scroll through the pages of posts and look for answers to your questions. When people are answering you, they usually "quote" your post as I have done above.
Please let me or any of the Hostess team know if you have more questions! We are here to help!

Hello Princess, my name is Janet and I'm 52. Tuesday I'll have a TLH LSO due to irregular and heavy periods over the last 2 years. I had a d&c early July to see if that would correct things but made things worse. in 2007 I had The right ovary removed due cysts, it was supposed to be outpatient and due to a bad reaction was back in The hospital for The next 3 days.
At first I was The most nervous about after because there is so much going on in my life right now besides this. My kids still think I'm still "Super Mom", my oldest is 32 and my youngest is 20 so my days of being "Super Mom" are far behind me. Now, as the surgery is the day after tomorrow the butterflies are now turning into need stinging my insides.
Ladies we can do this! We are strong!
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Is 41:10

Re: Pre-Op Hysterectomy: Open House Chat Thread - Today Sep 17, 2017
ladies! Stopping by to cheer you on!
It's perfectly understandable to be anxious about this surgery. I daresay a little bit of freaking out is totally allowed ! Best thing to do until your day is to keep busy. I continued working, working out, cleaning, decluttering, putting frequently used things in easy reach, and freezer meal prepping. Meal prepping was the most enjoyable, and more useful than the decluttering, since hospitality meals from friends, church and other groups eventually run out. If I had to add one more thing to the prep list, I'd make sure I had more expando-waist clothes, so yeah, I suggest a shopping spree - woo hoo! By the time the evening before came, my nerves were jumpy, but more with the anticipation of "Let's get this SHOW on the ROAD, people!" Morning of the surgery, the only thing that spooked me was my husband's driving .
If you're the type (like me) who likes info at her fingertips, download the free HysterSisters' What 350,000 Women Know About Hysterectomy guide. It became my recovery manual.
Best wishes for a successful surgery, and we'll see you on the Other Side!

Pre-Op Hysterectomy: Open House Chat Thread - Today Sep 17, 2017
Hello and best wishes to all of those heading in for hysterectomy. I had mine done 11 days ago and remember how nerve-wracking that Pre-Op visit was. I was afraid they would need to suddenly cancel my surgery for some reason. I've dealt with heavy painful periods since the beginning. I am 35 now and in the last few years, my periods were only getting worse and worse. I am so glad to be rid of that painful organ once and for all. The Pre-Op nurse shared her hysterectomy benefits with me (once fully recovered, she had increased energy, mental clarity, etc) which made me feel loads better about what I was heading into.
I was super nervous until I was finally in the hospital bed with the anesthesiologist by my side. The first few days afterward were challenging - mostly due to the anesthesia causing vertigo and nausea. The nurses took great care of my comfort and pain levels.
One important thing to remember is deep breathing afterwards. You will feel a heaviness, especially after shallow-breathing during sleep. A few deep breaths and you'll feel better.
I hope this helps.
