Upcoming hysterectomy: Tube out of stomach?

Counting down the days, 22 more to go. Celebrating my last miserable Period with pain. Somebody told me when u have an tah I will wake up with a tube coming out of my abdomen. Does anyone know if this is true or not. I'd prefer not to be surprised.

Re: Tube out of stomach

I didn't have one but my two sisters did... Different cities, different surgeons..

Re: Tube out of stomach

I had a TAH and no, I didn't have a tube coming out of my stomach. I had about 20 staples, a 7" vertical incision. I would ask your surgeon if this is normal practice for him.

Re: Tube out of stomach

I had a TAH and woke up with a Kevlar-like bandage covering my stomach, no tube. I *did* have a Foley (urinary) catheter coming out between my legs.

(((Newgrammie)))

As others have said, I think it entirely depends on the individual surgeon. I had a drain in my abdomen which was removed a few days after surgery. I don't think it's common practice, however.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy: Tube out of stomach?

I had a TAH and perhaps the person was referring to an on-q pump which is a device that delivers a local anesthetic medication to block pain in the area of your procedure. I had one for 5 days and it does have a tube that comes out of your abdomen and the medication drains into the tube. (The medication is placed in a pump that is shaped like a rubber ball). I was discharged from the hospital with it and then I had to see my physician on the third day after my discharge for the removal. I had no problems with it and I also had absolutely no pain. I hope that helps.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy: Tube out of stomach?

I also had a TAH but did not awake with any tube in my stomach. I was so groggy that I really wasn't sure what was under all my bandages - nor did I care. I was so relieved to have my surgery over with.

Since this concerns you, definitely ask your doctor what you can expect for your surgery. The last thing you need is stress worrying about "what ifs" that may not ever happen. Since you don't like surprises, you will feel more in control when you know what you can realistically expect to wake up to.

Hugs and best of luck on your upcoming surgery.
