Percoset...need advice

Hi ladies
I've just been wondering....has anyone else had really good results with percoset for pain? That's what they gave me at the ER on Wednesday and I've been taking it 3 times a day since then.

It's the ONLY medication I've taken in the last year that has given me ANY relief. I only have a few days worth left, and I'm wondering about the safety of taking this stuff until surgery in 5 weeks. I don't know if I should ask Prince Charming if he can prescribe more percoset, or if I should just try to tough it out using tylenol 3 (which doesn't do much for my pain any more).

I'm worried about becoming overly dependent on the percoset, and I wonder how hard it will be to get off them once I'm recovering.

Any comments???

Tam

Percoset...need advice

I was given Percocet in the hospital after my doctor took me off the Morphine. Percocet worked wonderfully. Dr. sent me home with a Percocet prescription and prescription-strength Motrin (800mg). This works really well. One of the nurses in the hospital told me that Motrin works well for "female" issues.

Since Percocet is a narcotic, you should be careful and consult with your doctor. But in the meantime, try Motrin - I've been taking 800mg of Motrin - which is basically 4-200mg ibuprofen (which is all motrin really is). I'm only 12 days post op and I've tried to stay away from the percocet because it makes me sleepy. I only take it at night when I have overdone it during the day.

Hope this helps.

percocet worked very well for me BUT it is
not good to take for very long. It is oyxcodone which is the same thing as oxycontin. After a few days it started to make me wired. It also started to make me nauseated. It still worked on the pain and worked well. I ALSO noticed when I did not take it I would get a headache. I got worried about that and ask my doc for something non narcotic. I got ultram and was shocked to see how much better I feel. For me it REALLY works to control the pain.

Hi Prippy
Thanks for your reply. I've tried the motrin...even in mega doses. It does nothing for the pain, and causes me serious stomach problems.

I do agree...the Percoset makes me very sleepy, but it's just so nice NOT to be in excruciating pain all the time...

I wish it were June already!!!!

(((rhavensunflower)))
what is ultram????
Did you find out if the headaches were a side effect of percoset?

I'd do anything to find a non-narcotic pain reliever that would work for me!!!

percoset

Ultram is a non narcodic pain reliever. I used it for my back for a while. As with any pain reliever it can cause problems with your liver and your kidneys so you shouldnt take it for long time. It does not have the side effects of sleepyness or twilight zone feeling you get with vicodin or percoset. Use whatever takes away your pain but consult your dr on the long term use of them as there are side effects with all drugs. Hope you have some pain relief soon. Good luck on your operation.

So far perc. is the only thing that will touch the pain. I am careful about taking it, trying all the other options first and drinking tons of water. I agree there are concerns, but ins. would not cover for any non-nar. pain meds. and tyl. doesn't do a thing. Just be careful and stay in control. What else to do?? Major pain, or live a life??

thank you (((lillalane)))
I was thinking along the same lines. I can take the percoset and be pain free (although a little loopy), or I can suffer with the tylenol 3 and still be in pain and grouchy.

I guess I'm just really worried about the whole "addiction" thing. I also don't know if my regular doc or gyn will prescribe any more of the percoset.

I'm just stressing out right now, because I am so tired of hurting!!

Tam, ask! Mine has been filled 3-4 times. The Dr. has seen me in pain - though not when it is at its worst. I discovered that one worked. If I took another 4 hours later I was still ok, It was the 3rd 4 hours after that - that was trouble. I couldn't afford to crawl into bed and crash - so time your meds. carefully. Holding out worked some, the heating pad, or a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel ( I have a fake fur cover for mine) is a great tool, and you can hold it in your lap when you are working at your desk, or eating dinner (who wants to eat???) The water is really important, the narc. qualities of the med. can make you const. which is more trouble on top of everything. My Dr. also suggested Benfiber which is a soluble fiber you can put in anything - coffee! - and you won't taste it.
Just be strong, in charge, drink, and live. This will all be over soon.
