Weight Gain

Hello everyone. I have heard stories that after a hysterectomy most woman gain weight and have trouble losing it. From your experiences, is this true. I know that there will be swelling and I am prepared for that but I don't want to gain weight.

Thanks,

Lynn

Weight Gain

I think a large part of it has to do with whether or not you have your ovaries removed. Since ovaries are part of your overall endocrine system, oophorectomy can affect metabolism.

I think it also depends on why you're having a hyster and your health to begin with. If you have a weight problem before a hyster, it's not likely that the hyster will solve it.

Many women find that a procedure like this is a great opportunity to change their health habits and make more positive changes. I mean, why go through all of this to get rid of bleeding or pain and then just ignore the rest of our bodies?

I had a SAH last August and am at within 2 pounds of where I was before surgery. I found that my bladder pressure was actually making me less active. I'm more active now and I think part of the reason that I haven't LOST weight is because I'm adding muscle. Some of my weight at the moment is still my swelly belly too (which can balloon up to 5 pounds over the weekends when I might overdo it). But then again, I'm only 135 lbs and 5'5", so my weight has not been much of an issue to me.

Eat healthy and sensibly during recovery, ease back into activity and you should do fine.

Take care.

Weight Gain

Hi, I agree that your personal health and condition do play a big part in it all. I had a tah/bso and actually lost weight at first. I'm a pretty active person and was a bit concerned that my enforced inactivity during recovery would result in a weight gain. But, due to a lack of much appetite and not being able to eat much at a time - I lost several pounds. Now, at 2 1/2 years post op - I'm pretty much the same as before my hyst ( within my normal weight range ).

Best wishes.

Weight Gain

Glad to hear this. I am 50 and like to keep my weight in the 130 range. (5'8") I had put a few pounds on with the huge cyst I had and was worried that lack of activity after surgery would cause weight gain. So far, no gain, a little loss. Think I can keep it off when I can work out and walk again.

Weight Gain

I am looking forward to losing weight after surgery.
I used to be a really active person always running and working out, but with all my pain and stuff with my problems, I dont' have the energy.
So I know I will lose weight after I heal. I have probably gained about 15 to 20 lbs since I started having these problems. And 15 to 20 lbs don't look so great on a little 5'4 frame! lol

Weight Gain

Hi sister;

I know exactly what you mean about th eno energy etc.

I am also 5 foot 4 and I have gained about 15 pounds since this all started about a year ago.

I used to be so active that I didn't have to work out cause I was always moving be it sports, chores etc.

Now I am luck if I make it through the day with the pain and bleeding.

I have 4 weeks until my special day and I am very nervous and scared.

But, I have been working on a plan when I come home and what I can do keep me busy and slowly start moving again.

I am getting a trainer at the gym I go to after the doctor gives me ok and I am getting into shape and making the first step to get my life back.
