One week away and getting a cough.

So I am one week away from my surgery. I am getting some congestion and a bit of a cough. Probably to early to go to the Dr. I am thinking if I wait it might get worse as it usually does. Not sure what to do. Any suggestions? Do they still do surgery if you are a little under the weather?

Re: One week away and getting a cough.

Let your doctor know. Mine put me on a really strong antibiotic just in case. As long as your lungs are clear, then you should be good to go for surgery. If you get bad, they will probably reschedule you. You don't wanna take any chances, with anesthesia and your lungs.

Re: One week away and getting a cough.

I agree - talk to your doctor. Please do not self medicate - you are probably in the period where they start restricting your meds. This can include herbs and supplements. See what they say, hopefully they can give you something.

Re: One week away and getting a cough.

Sleep propped up at in incline with some pillows. This can help keep the cough from going down too far and end up as a chest cold. (I do this because I have asthma and it helps.)

Good luck. I hope you feel better soon and get to keep your original date.

Re: One week away and getting a cough.

I was really sick over the weekend....my surgery is scheduled for Monday. I have a little conjestion and dry throat....i am going to see my primary care doc today for my medical clearance. Hoping that he thinks it's okay for me to proceed. It stinks that we can't take anything to help it move along and out...but keeping my fingers crossed it's clearing up.

Re: One week away and getting a cough.

I have an allergy cough that I get every winter. This year we haven't found a med to control it. It is not a chest cough but a throat cough and it drives me crazy when I lie down. My surgery is next week and I am afraid the coughing is going to be very painful post-op.

Get a small pillow to hold against your tummy when you cough or sneeze. It helps quite a bit.
