any other questions?

Hi
Going to gyn. Friday to find out about my urodynamics test and if my incontinence can be fixed with surgery. While I'm there, from everything the doctor has indicated, this will be the appointment that we go ahead and schedule surgery and they give a bunch of paperwork and make their patients watch a video and that sort of thing.
I have a list of questions I want to ask, getting some of them from the link that most here refer to, thought of some on my own and want to know if any of you ladies might be able to think of anything else that is important that I might not have thought of. My DH is going to be at this appointment with me, so I'll have two sets of ears.

Here are my questions thus far...

-closing incision with staples or stitches?
-how long in hospital?
-what kind of pain medicine after surgery and when I'm home?
-what if ovary shuts down...how will I know, what can we do, and when might it start working again...what if it doesn't?
-any pre-op testing or preparations?
-what are general restrictions after surgery?
-hysterectomy removing exactly what??? (the dr. already told me that he'd do AH, thru my c-sec. incision, removing uterus for sure, possibly remove right ovary and maybe appendix) what about cervix? do I have the choice to keep or not?

Can anyone think of any other "must ask" questions. I can't think tonight and it doesn't help that I took an Ultram earlier for my pain control and it has this magical-ness about it that it not only takes away my pain, but makes me half "loopy"
I can't take them through the day because of that...I'd never get through work, but when I'm achin' I definitely take one when I'm home. It's working in full swing. I could just zonk right now, and I always do seem to sleep good and I have just a good feeling when I crawl into bed and don't hurt or have any pain. But as the doctor said...I can't be on medicine forever.

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you.

any other questions?

Ask if he can use "glue" on the incision. That is what I had. No pain of removal of stitch. or stap.

Why keep the cervix?

I am wondering why wouldn't they take the cervix, I want all of my stuff to be taken because of the fear of having cervical cancer later. Anyway just wondering. If the doctor plans on doing a TAH then if the uterus is gone why keep the ovary other than the meer reason of not having to take HRT. My thoughts are all running together because of the Darvocet and the Panlor SS. Nothing is working. The cramps just keep coming. Sometimes they are so bad that they make me throw up.
Ask your doctor about the epidural for pain after surgery. My doctor explained it to me that the epidural is put in place while you are still in surgery and that the morephine is injected and it last for 20 hrs and then it is dosed up again and last for another 20 hrs and then it is taken out and shortly after that you should be able to tell how bad your pain will be and then they can write a script for you and let you go home. He also told me that it is totally voluntary and that he did recommend it so I wouldn't wake up in pain. You won't be numb just feel no PAIN!!!!!!!!

any other questions?

Hi Tabbyburd,
Well, when I was at my last appt. he said AH thru c-sec incision, obviously take uterus, he said about right ovary because that is the side I seem to get more pain from...down into my thigh, I get most of my ovulating pain there and just in general, it mostly is my right side. With that, he said that's why he'd consider taking my appendix, too, because it's right side and that can be a problem sometimes you don't know it since it's my right side...so taking right ovary and appendix is eliminating the chance of anything hurting. He said I'd have more than enough estrogen with one ovary...I don't want to be on HRT if I don't have to, and from previous surgeries, my ovaries were healthy. When we were talking at that appt. he never mentioned the cervix, I think because at the time, it was just a little premature to talk about the specifics since I still had to do my urodynamics test, and he got the "yes" from me that I want surgery. So, that's why I am going back tomorrow...to talk specifics. I think if I am given the choice, I will have my cervix removed as well...one less thing in there that something can go wrong, no paps, no fear of mini-periods, that sort of thing.
I hope you can soon feel better. I'm sorry to hear that your cramping is that bad.

any other questions?

From what I've read and heard from others, being able to avoid taking HRT is a major advantage. For some women that go on HRT, it takes years to get the doses and balances right. In the meantime, they deal with all the problems. Plus, I'm not a big fan of premarin for other reasons. To me, unless the ovaries are diseased, I'd rather keep them.

Esa,

Keep in mind that if you keep your cervix there is a high chance that you'll have mini-periods each month. Not something I have to worry about, but I have seen it posted on the boards.

Questions for the doc/comments:

1. Will you need to do a bowel prep and if so, what will it consist of? This is espeically important if you have to work or if you have small children to take care of. My bowel prep was liquids the day before, 2 correctal at 2pm the day before, 1 bottle of mag citrate at 3pm the day before, enema the night before and enema the morning of. My surgery was on a Friday so I had to take off from work the Thrusday before.

2. Can he give you prescriptions for your pain meds prior to your surgery? My doctor always gives me pain med prescriptions (I've had 2 laps prior to my hyst) before my surgery. This way I can get them filled and hubby didn't have to worry about stopping on the way home from the surgery, or going back out once he got me home.

Good luck with your surgery.
