What should I do about HRT? I'm so confused!!
I am scheduled for a TAH/BSO on Oct 27th. I am trying to do as much research as possible about HRT but I'm confused. My doc says she doesn't do biodentical at all. She says she wants to put a patch on me in recovery. I am finding that I get more "real" information from all of you. Sites only promote their beneficial info. and not impartial information. What have you found to be the case? Am I ever going to really feel better? Do I have to gain weight?
Thanks for all your help Ladies!! I love this site

Keveleth1,
You are wise to learn about HRT pre-op.
Has your doc told you what brand of patch she intends to use? There are several 'bio-identical' patches available so I'm wondering if she is planning to use one of them? Bio-identical can be a confusing word, people sometimes use it to describe only hormones offered from compounding pharmacies. Maybe that's what your doc is talking about.
Bio-identical is also used to describe a hormone that all the atoms in the molecule look exactly like all the atoms in the estrogen that your body makes. They are manufactured from plants to look and act just like our hormones. Here is a list of estrogen patches that are bio-identical:
Alora®, Climara®, Esclim®, Estraderm®, FemPatch®, Vivelle®
I'm using Vivelle as do lots of women around HS. It's bio-identical but manufactured by a pharmaceutical company and approved by the FDA. I feel better, when my HRT is balanced correctly, on HRT than I did on my own hormones. I lost 50 pounds on HRT.
There is lots of information on HRT here on the site. Check out some of the articles (blue tab at the top of every page). Look under Menopause. Hope this helps.

Re: What should I do about HRT? I'm so confused!!
I had a TAH/BSO on August 8 (six weeks ago tomorrow!!!) and my doctor put a patch on me before I woke up from the surgery, just as planned.
I have been applying the Vivelle patch 0.1 on schedule ever since. I have had no menopausal symptoms. No hot flashes, no mood swings, nothing.
However, my mom told me she did not suffer from hot flashes or mood swings when she went through menopause, and I have heard it can be hereditary. I do wonder whether I need the patch at all. Perhaps I'd be non-symptomatic anyway. I plan to discuss the possibility with my doctor during my 6 week check up this week. I'm wondering if I can try doing without for a week and see how it goes...not sure what the response will be. Will let you know.
Weight has remained the same, and I am looking forward to getting the okay to work out again; my tummy is getting squishy which is unacceptable! So far, I am only cleared to walk and bike ride.
