Splenda (2004)

I don't mind the taste of splenda. I am also diabetic, and I am not supposed to use real sugar... I get horrible migraines. So far all the artificial sweeteners cause it, including splenda. So I am stuck. For me the lesser of the two evils, is real sugar.

Splenda (2004)

musiclover1 - I had a BSO on 8-26-08, so I am just 11 days out from surgery, but I noticed that I am also itching! The other night I also got really dizzy when I went to sleep. The room wqs spinning and I thought I would throw up! I have always been able to use Splenda, but now I am wondering if the same thing could be happening to me. I am going to the dr on Monday for my 2 week post op check up and I was going to discuss thiese episodes with him anyway. BTW, I also habve been getting slight headaches each day for the last few days. I thought it just might be hormone related...maybe not!

Splenda (2004)

Hi! It's been a while since anyone posted, but I wanted to add my bit here. I used to use Splenda, then discovered that that's why my joints were aching so much. Quit using it, the pain went away. Went back to it, the pain flared up again. Several times. Now, I won't touch it.

Re: Splenda

Splenda gave me cluster/migraines and elevated PMS symptoms. I had no idea that this was the cause was until I stopped using the "fake" stuff. I have a gluten sensitivity and an inability to digest carbohydrates (not a true celiac - thankfully) - so I still follow the Atkins principles but I don't bother with any of the processed products. I do much better with whole foods, mostly protein and healthy fat - and a bit of honey thrown in, thank you!

Re: Splenda

I think as far as sugar substitutes Stevia is the natural way to go...but you have to find the right brand that doesnt give a bitter after taste....I dont use real sugar all that much....a good read is "Sugar Busters" and at all cost avoid all things that have High Frutose Corn Syrup in them! It's really bad for you.

Re: Splenda

I'm not diabetic, but my dad is. I learned from my neurologist the Splenda is really bad for migraine sufferers. So, I use agave nectar or stevia. I even got my stubborn dad on them both! He even bought a bottle of agave nectar and took it to work with him! Since it has a low glycemic index, it's great for diabetics.

Re: Splenda

Guys, I hope you know Splenda is a brand of sucralose, and sucralose is just sugar with chlorine atoms stuck in between chains to make it harder to digest? That the whole theory behind it is that the molecule is too big to digest? It's basically sugar with chlorine. Two very bad things.
I wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole, or aspartame either.
At the moment I'll only eat 'whole' stevia (not the rebiosides extract) and use it sparingly.

One thing that I do know is that it doesn't effect my body the same way that "sugar" does so I don't crave it. I don't find it addicting in nature. All I know is that it's "natural" from some form of fructose (fruit source) but that's it. Anyone know some technical jargon?

I use stevia-it’s natural or brown sugar. Sometimes I still use white sugar too. Stevia is the most natural

Re: Splenda

I have poor stomach motility, and my gastroenterologist and her dietician advised me to avoid all artificial sweeteners because they're hard to digest, and end up being fermented by bacteria in the colon, leading to bloating and excessive flatulence. I was also warned to watch out for sugar alcohols - anything ending in itol - which are commonly used as an artificial sweetener, and naturally present in foods like apples, plums and prunes, apricots, and cherries, because they act as a stimulant on the intestinal tract, plus they have the same effect described above; unfortunately, I love apples and cherries, so I'm willing to put up with some discomfort. When I need a little sugar for a recipe, I choose unrefined cane sugar, or sometimes coconut sugar for a little extra flavour, because they're whole foods that my body recognizes and knows how to handle.
