Did anybody else get the scarey "2 out of every 1000" stat? my doc said that these are mostly women with cardiac prior problems but still....it's the only thing that even caused my heart to flutter a little bit.

Every surgery has risks, not just hysterectomy. Remind yourself how many times people you know have had a procedure and they did just fine.
You'll be fine. Best wishes!

All right, audiann, take a deep breath and listen to your sister for a moment. Here's another statistic for you: hysterectomy is by far the safest form of major surgery. There are less risks of serious complications and death than any other surgery that opens up the abdomen. I know, the statistics really ate me alive, because I'm a fact junkie: once I start, I can't stop until I'm freaking! But, I made it through. Every princess who went in the day I did made it. Actually, we have not lost one since I joined the boards. Most sisters check in as soon as they can, so 99.9% of us make it out with a few less organs and a chance at a new life! Try to relax, and feel free to turn to us anytime! Good luck!

audiann, Yes, do just pause and consider the numbers. They are real. Most women that die as a result of this surgery do have underlying medical conditions. Don't ignore the rest of the complications on the list. Consider how life altering any one of them might potentially be. This is major surgery and the risks involved should catagorically outweight the benefits!
The risks did not outweight the benefits in my case. I was not and am not happy with the result.
Most women on this site will report positive benefits as a result of the surgery. This would reflect the odds of a positive outcome in general. There are a few of us who feel it is important to provide our less than positive result. We were once in that group without problems. We are not here because of some defect of personality. We are here because of a negative surgical outcome. Do read the fine print on the surgical consent form and do discuss all the possible outcomes of surgery with your doctor. You really do have to decide if the benefits of surgery will outweight the possible risks in your particular case. In my case- I really feel that my doctor did not fully answer my questions and definately did not volunteer any negative information. You really have to ask!
