Upcoming hysterectomy 12/5: Do I really need someone with me?

Hi,
My surgery is in a couple of weeks. I’m having a robotic hysterectomy with an overnight stay. I have to be at the hospital at 4:30am and the surgery is scheduled for 7am.
The question is do I have to have someone there during and after surgery? I really don’t want to ask someone to sit at the hospital with me all that time. My friends work too. My son, bless him, he got his first real job after college. He’s only been there a couple of months so I’m definitely not asking him to forego work and take time off. He’s my ride home anyway. I figure I can give them his number if something goes wrong. I’m so afraid they’ll cancel surgery if someone is not there with me.
Any thoughts? Thanks!

Re: Do I really need someone with me?

Check with your hospital but most do not require anyone actually on site with you. As long as they have your son as a contact it should be fine. You will need him to pick you up as they usually won't release you without an adult with you.

Re: Do I really need someone with me?

I was by myself, and it was not an issue.

Some hospitals may require to have someone picking you up when they discharge you, so I would check on that

Re: Do I really need someone with me?

I not only live by myself, my surgery city was two hours away from my home city. I took the bus in for the surgery. It wasn't a problem at all. A friend who lives in my surgery drove me home three days later.

I was asked on admission to provide the name and phone number of someone who could make healthcare decisions on my behalf. (This is a just-in-case measure.) I gave them my sister's name and phone number as she holds my healthcare power-of-attorney. But she not only wasn't present during the surgery, she doesn't even live in the same country as I do. :-)

Re: Do I really need someone with me?

Actually after I checked in and was in the pre-op waiting area I sent my husband to Costco then home to let the dog out. Once I was out of surgery and settled in my room he came back out and brought me my bag since I had a 2 night stay.

Re: Do I really need someone with me?

I had a three-night stay and I brought my bag with me. No one else was going to do it. When I woke up in my hospital bed after surgery, the first thing I did was look around the room the make sure my bag had made it there! It had. :-)

Thank you for all the replies. I feel much better now.
My son will be picking me up when I’m discharged so we’re good in that area.
Thanks again, everyone!
