Hysterectomy for Degenerating Fibroid?

Went for annual exam recently and the APRN wanted to do vaginal ultrasound to check size of fibroid that has been present for several years. During ultrasound, she left to get MD to perform/evaluate the ultrasound. Evidently, the single 5 cm fibroid I have looks atypical and is degenerating. (I had uterine ablation in 2017 for heavy bleeding caused by the fibroid.) The GYN recommended complete hysterectomy except one ovary. I have no pain or bleeding from the fibroid. Only symptoms experienced from the fibroid are urination frequency and belly bloating. Appointment for second opinion is in August. What are some questions/concerns I should discuss with the second GYN? I feel the first GYN's opinion is too extreme with the information I have been given.

Re: Hysterectomy for Degenerating Fibroid?

Dear cyndi:

Kudos to you for seeking out a second opinion! I wonder why the doctor thinks you need to lose one of the ovaries also?

Keep researching so you are able to make the best decisions for your own case. I am sending huge cyberhugs

Re: Hysterectomy for Degenerating Fibroid?

and greetings from a fellow fibroid sister!
My main troublemaker was a jumbo grapefruit pressing on my bladder, so my main symptoms were urinary frequency and leakage, and I also had the bloating, which my doctor attributed to my enlarged uterus pressing on my stomach. As you consider your options, please remember that the ovaries are not a part of any type or definition of a hysterectomy; their removal is considered a separate surgery, called an oopherectomy, which is sometimes done at the same time. I do agree that you should keep both ovaries, if they're perfectly healthy; I kept mine at age 48, because my surgeon and I agreed that the benefits of their continued hormone production outweighed any risks, and even now in my 50s, I'm still realizing the benefits of this decision. If ovarian cancer is a concern, then I suggest asking your second opinion doctor about having your Fallopian tubes removed, as was done in my case, because recent studies suggest that ovarian cancer often starts there. I would also suggest asking if you would be a candidate for a less invasive option like laparoscopic surgery; my uterus was the size of a 22 week pregnancy, and I was given 2 monthly shots of Lupron, which shrank it to the point where I could have my surgery done laparoscopically. Please update us after your appointment in August, to let us know what you decide!
