My MIND is in a WHIRL!! Just found out about needing a Hysterectomy!!!

NOT SO SURE, WHAT TO THINK NOW......
I was SO excited about getting my new job this Feb 2012, & then qualify for Health Insurance & all that by May 1st -

So I go get my very 1st Physical, in about 2 1/2 or 3 years (was about May 2009 last time), this past May 18th, 2012, only to have my new Dr (we moved Feb 2011) say, "Hmmm.....you seem to have a very large MASS or GROWTH here", as she pressed down in my tummy area, around the uterus & ovary areas......

Fast forward, to Weds May 23rd, I get an Ultrasound, & there are at least THREE Fibroids, one about 7 1/2 cm big, RIGHT about my cervix - WHICH explains the heavy periods for a while now, the back-to-teenage-girl CRAMPS again!! UGH!!, the FREQUENT peeing like a PREGNANT woman & also some constipation.....

THEN, a NEW visit to a OB/GYN, who gave me the DREADED NEWS that I do indeed need a Hysterectomy!!

Just ONE MORE Ultrasound, coming up, Mon June 4th, that Dr will attend, just to see exactly HOW he will do the surgery - minimally invasive: with a ONE-week recovery (Lapriscopically), or MAJORLY-invasive, with a SIX-week recovery??

Getting WORRIED here!!!
What lies ahead?? What type of Hysterectomy will I wind up with, I'm wondering........
What kinds of QUESTIONS should I be asking the OB/GYN??
What about bleeding during surgey??
How long in the hospital?
Yada-yada-yada......

Re: My MIND is in a WHIRL!! Just found out about needing a Hysterectomy!!!

Hi there. You have come to the right place to help inform on what lies ahead. Remember everyone is different and so is their recovery. From my experience I think that one week recovery time for lapo surgery is crazy. I know some doctors tell you that but dont expect it. I was out of work for 6 weeks but I did set up a postop infection that put my recovery back. As far as sex goes I think it is a no-no for a least 6 weeks. Your hosital stay will mostly depend on which type of surgery you have and if you have complications or not. My surgery went smooth and my stay was just one night. As far as bleeding goes I only had a slight bit of spotting for a day after my surgery. I honestly didnt know what to expect. This forum really helped me alot. I hope you find it as useful as I have.

Thanks a bunch, Azyria -
I'm so very glad to have found this site, BEFORE the surgery takes place, in the next couple weeks......

Re: My MIND is in a WHIRL!! Just found out about needing a Hysterectomy!!!

Hi Cheryl -

I had total abdominal hysterectomy (TAH) and both ovaries and tubes removed (BSO), and I was in the hospital for 3 1/2 days.

I was off work (desk job) for 3 weeks, and then went back part time only for the next 5 weeks and that was TOUGH, TOUGH, TOUGH. With week 8 I could finally return to full time. 100% recovery takes about 12 months. I feel about 90 to 95% recovered now at 12+ months.

From the lap. hyster ladies I have read, 1 week recovery is not very realistic. There is still much healing to do on the inside. 100% recovery is about 6 to 9 months.

Bleeding during surgery was minimal. I had some bleeding after surgery. In addition, I had clear and yellowish discharge for six weeks post-op, which was normal. I wore one of those ultra-thin maxis for all six weeks.

This is a great site for support and information. Post questions, as well as your fears and emotions. We are here to help and support you.

Re: My MIND is in a WHIRL!! Just found out about needing a Hysterectomy!!!

I have learned alot on this website also. I found out 3 weeks ago that will need at least to have my uterus only removed but I'm OK with everything since I don't plan on having children. It sounds early to really tell what they will do but after tomorrow when you see the doctor and know more , come back here and do some searches and read what has happened with other ladies. It will really help alot. I have one more week before surgery and reading on this website really puts my mind at ease.

Re: My MIND is in a WHIRL!! Just found out about needing a Hysterectomy!!!

While some of the other less invasive types of hysterectomy do have less pain sooner than a TAH (my DvH though felt just like my c-sections for the first 6 hours post op), none of them have a 1 week recovery. Even my robotic assisted hysterectomy has a 6 week recovery (though I was feeling quite well at 3 weeks). So, don't focus on a one week recovery vs a 6 week. They all have an initial 6 week recovery. If you have a lot of stuff going on in there then a TAH gives your doctor good, clear access to everything.

Take a deep breath, and trust your doctor to determine which hysterectomy type is best for your case.

I think most of us stayed in the hospital one night. Most of us are told no lifting anything over 10 lbs, no pushing, no pulling, and no exercising (beyond walking) for 6 weeks.
