Iron Pills.

2 weeks ago I started taking iron tablets, my blood test from the hospital showed I was anemic. Feeling very tired. Yesterday I went back to doctor the blood test showed I was not anemic. I also Feel great, like I can do anything! I can't believe the pills made me feel so great so fast, I am going to keep taking them since they make me feel so great! My doctor said that I am healed up, come back in 2 months if hot flashes are still bad. is anybody out there having real bad hot flashes, even though I am taking estrogen, have been taking it for 2 years. I had both overies taking out, was expercing menupause before surgery, night flashes keeping me awake at night. Can iron pills really work that fast!

Re: Iron Pills.

That depends on how anemic you were. They could work that fast, if you didn't have very far to recover. You don't say how old you are: if you're younger, then continuing to take the pills might not hurt you, but too much iron is bad for you. Check with your doctor to see what he or she thinks.

Re: Iron Pills.

I was not anemic pre-op, but due to some blood loss during surgery, I became anemic post-op. I was told to take an iron tablet each day until my six week checkup. I went for another blood test, and was told that the office would call if my iron was still low. It's been over a week, and no phone call, so I am guessing that my iron has come back up. However, I had asked my doctor if it was okay to continue taking the rest of the bottle. He said that was a good idea, as it takes about another month for the iron stores in your bone marrow to increase. I just figured if I paid for a whole bottle of 100 tablets, I may as well get my money's worth, and use the whole bottle!! Course, during my recovery, I told everyone I was on an "Enhanced DH diet". Since DH was doing the meal preps, he started to include more foods that were iron rich, to help me along.

Glad to hear you are doing so well! I am now having hot flashes too, even though I still have my ovaries. Aren't they fun??!!!

Re: Iron Pills.

I am 38 had my ovaries taken out because they both had cysts on them, and already going through premenupause. So I would not have to go through another surgery. Only thing bothering me since surgery is really bad hot flashes and night sweats keeping me up at night and sometimes making me feel sick to my stomach. No more periods! I have been having bad cramping like when I was having periods, but doctor said it was nerves waking up usually takes 3 monthes. But getting better.

Re: Iron Pills.

After starting to take iron, my initial improvement was very fast also. Before I was getting to the point where I could not walk up a flight of stairs or run any longer, which was the issue that sent me to the doctor. But even though I was improving, he said that my levels were so poor that I need to stay on the pills for longer.

I have taken them since last summer and I am going in on Monday for retesting to see if I could get off them.

Re: Iron Pills.

I would discuss continuing taking the iron long-term with your doctor. It is possible to get too much of a good thing once you are no longer menstruating. They can work very fast, that's for sure.
