Ovary question

I know this might be a naive question, but can you have problems with one ovary and have no problems with the other?

Ever since I was a teen my right has bothered me, and about 15 years ago I went ot a GYN who did a sonogram and told me that i had a little cyst, to keep an eye on it (!) and if it got to be bothersome, then do something about it. He also told me that they rupture naturally every month to release the egg.

Well my right side has been bothering me (as well as the fibroids giving me lots of back pain and all the other nasties) for quite a few months off-and-on now, and I expect I am going to have to have it taken out along with the uterus/fibroids.

Question, though: if I never had a problem with the left ovary, can I keep it? Pretty please?

Ovary question

Well Im sure that you keeping your left ovary will be up to you and your doctor. My left should have been taken and he left it and took the other one, but both were producing cysts, he just figured it was a lesser of two evils. So if your left isnt bothering you, then the question to yourself is do you want to just get it over and done and take it all out or risk a repeat surgery in a few years (like alot of us on here). Good luck in whatever you decide!

Ovary question

Hi Elizadoo.... that is a tricky question. I chose to keep 1 ovary and I had to have surgery 9 months later to remove a 16cm perotineal inclusion cyst (which has a recurrence rate of 30% to 50%). I still kept my 1 lonely ovary. I told the Dr. that I will give it one more shot at behaving. I hope that it makes it but surgery is no joke either. I thought this recovery would be way easier and it has been in some sense but not like I thought. If you chose to keep one, just be prepared that you may have issues in the future...but you may not either. I see lots of posts of cyst problems after hysterectomies but for the women that don't, I could see were they would be out enjoyiing life and not coming here to post...does that make sense??? good luck in your decision. That was a very difficult one for me personally because of familial cancer.

Ovary question

Yes, it is possible to have a problem with one ovary and not the other. Before I had my hysterectomy it was my right ovary that gave me trouble. I had to have it removed due to a large cyst that had attached itself. Having a cyst on an ovary doesn't necessarily mean problems. It all depends on the size and if it goes away or not. I have had cysts in the past that went away on their own.

If the ovary has not given you trouble in the past and is okay when the doctor does your surgery I would think that you could keep it. But that is something best determined by your doctor.

Ovary question

I've had problems with my right ovary since I was a teenager, but never would even know I had a left one -- perfectly fine. My doctor gave me the option of taking or leaving the troublesome one, but recommended I keep the one that is working fine.

I decided to take the right one. It's really a decision between you and your doctor, you should ask about your options....good luck!
