4 weeks till TAH
I am now 4 weeks till my TAH w/ BSO for endometriosis and adenomyosis. I am more relaxed with my decision, I think because my body has been in enough pain that it seems like the body is telling me this is the right thing. Two pain meds a day right now just to make it through ...
The issue I'm having is with husband who seems to think that this isn't as big of a deal as I'm making it out to be. He planned our family vacation for July, about 12 weeks post-op, and says we can do family hiking and such. I tried to explain that my energy level and body condition may not allow for too much activity like hiking for hours, and he replied, "you're preparing for the worst. My mom never had trouble when she had her surgery." I think I'm just being cautious, but he seems to think that the restrictions for 4 to 6 weeks after surgery aren't really all that necessary, and I may not need the full 6 to 8 weeks off work. Uh, dr thinks I'll definitely need the 6 to 8 weeks at a minimum! Maybe he's just worried and trying to down play it within his own mind, but it's not helping me prepare for the surgery at all.
My surgery is planned for 4/14 and I will not be released from the hospital until 4/16 or 4/17. Our kids will be with family the weekend I come home, and my sister is staying w/ me the week after surgery to help with the daily stuff. I've picked up bigger undies than usual, lounge pants, new pj shorts, etc for the recovery time. My biggest 'fear' w/ the menopause symptoms ... hot flashes. We already have a temperature war at home with my husband wanting it warmer than I do (he sleeps w/ a space heater, I sleep w/ a fan). But we'll make it work.
Thanks for listening ...
~Amy

Re: 4 weeks till TAH
Hi Amy! It's hard for others to understand exactly what we are going through. You might ask your husband to go to www.misterhystersisters.com. There is a lot of helpful information there and it will help him to understand what you are going through and what to expect.
Everyone's recovery is different but I don't think I would have been up for hiking at 12 weeks in recovery. But, a nice relaxing vacation would have been OK. Just listen to your body and don't overdo it.
I wish you the best on your surgery and recovery!

Re: 4 weeks till TAH
My DH didn't understand until DR explained what Major surgery meant. My TAH is Tuesday so I hope he remembers what major means. Will let you know after how good he is about restrictions. If he can change anybody can. He is used to me doing for everybody and not slowing down. But this time is mine and I am going to do what is best for me. I have learned from this site, TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. Keep reading this site and you will be prepared.

Re: 4 weeks till TAH
maybe have him read some of the things here on recovery - that may help. Also, I learned that in Europe they get 12 weeks off for a TAH!
There are a ton of stories in Post op where women talk about 3 months later & still really tired & aren't 100% up to speed in energy & daily activities.
Be strong & stick to your guns - can you bring him with you to pre op appt so he can hear from the doc how long you really need to recover?
Last resort: May be graphic, but if he just "doesn't get it" make him watch the procedure- it's on You Tube. He'll probably pass out & then realize how much you're getting done to you & how much time you need to heal!

Re: 4 weeks till TAH
Well, I am only 1 week post op and I am telling you that you will need to rest your body. I had a LAVH and I felt like I hadn't worked out in 2 years and then went to the gym and worked out with extreme intensity full force. It seems as the days went by I was more sore each day. My whole body ached! I feel a little better today than I did 3 days ago but I felt worse before I felt better if you know what I mean. Plus the Dr nicked my bladder and I came home with a catheter for the next 3 weeks. I also didn't plan on having this awful backache since I got home or my IV site being really sore and the sore throat that I had for the first week, from the breathing tube being put down my throat. Lots to think about and this is truly a major surgery.

Re: 4 weeks till TAH
Plan on taking it easy for a long time. The reality is I want to be instantly able to do all I did before. However, healing takes time. I canceled a camping trip I was planning to take in August. I know I have a tendency to overdo and I don't want to have post surgery complications when out primitive camping. Yeah, August is six months after my surgery, but in reality, I'll still be healing.
You really will need to take it slow and pay attention to all of the limits your doctor places on you. If your husband wants to go on this trip, make certain he is perfectly OK with you staying in a hotel and taking it easy. He can share pictures of what he saw on the hike each day. Otherwise, he needs to be willing to do really short hikes with lots of rest stops.
This really is major surgery. Take all the time your doctor says to recover. Don't try to cut it short. I highly suggest reading the checkpoints for a realistic look ahead on what it is going to be like. Better yet, have your husband read them.

Re: 4 weeks till TAH
Thanks, Ladies!
I think my husband is getting it slowly ... he commented this weekend about a hiking trip he wants to take and even said, "I can take one or two of the kids with me, and you can stay behind to rest." Rather than seeing my apprehension as "thinking the worst" he's starting to realize that I will have to listen to my body. I'm fine hanging out in our rental cabin with my crocheting or a book, or taking a chair to sit outside the van, enjoying the sunshine while he hikes.
He saw me in tears last night due to my pain so I think the reality of it all is sinking in ... slowly.
He did go to an appt with me in January to hear what the dr had to say, but again, I think he used that as a generalization only.
I do appreciate all the comments & encouragement!
