Overweight challenges

Hello I am new here . scheduled for mid march. I won't know which type of hyster I will be having until they are doing it based on scar tissue but I'm about 100 lbs overweight and very out of shape. I'm nervous that my weight will complicate my recovery not to mention hearing all the menopause weight gain stories . Any experiences or advice to help would be appreciated

Re: Overweight challenges

I was about the same as you as far as weight. Did fine and recovery was uneventful. I did gain about 10 lbs after surgery from sitting on my butt most of the time, but have since went back to the gym and have lost the 10 and hoping for LOTS more. One day at a time I say!

Good Luck!

Re: Overweight challenges

Hi Ang44-

Here is an article that might help: Special Considerations for Overweight Hysterectomy Patients

Also, weight gain is not a given for this surgery or in menopause. Everyone is different. I known some who have gained, and some who have lost weight. It depends on many factors.

Re: Overweight challenges

Hi! MJ, fluffy sister, reporting for duty!

One of the main things you lose (and lose very quickly) after surgery is your stamina. There's no time for you to lose serious weight before surgery, but here are some things you can do:

Walk as much as you feel like walking. Gently get yourself in shape.

If you have access to a swimming pool, do some swimming. It's low-impact exercise!

Do push-ups against the wall or a door frame to build your upper-body strength. This will help you move around (including getting in and out of bed) after surgery. I found that my abdominal muscles were basically useless and I had to lift myself by rolling on my side and using my arms!

When you're relaxing in front of the TV, find some arm weights (or even veggie or soup cans) and lift them while you're watching TV. This also helps build some upper body strength.

Although there may be concerns with your weight, remember that it's your overall health, not just the number on the scale, which means more in terms of the way you'll heal from your surgery.

All of the gentle exercises I've suggested (assuming, of course, that your doc says it's OK for you to exercise!) can also help with pre-op stress and nerves.

to you. Hope this helps!
