Da Vinci hysterectomy ahead
Hello all. As I posted on the I'm new thread I will be having a Davinci Hysterectomy on July 30th 2009. I would love any advice and tips I can get. The reason for my surgery is fibroids causing excessive bleeding, pain and a period that last pretty much the entire month every month. I am only waiting until July due to work obligations. Tips, advice and support would be greatly welcome as I have never had surgery before and am a bit scared.

Hi , I too had fibroids then started hemoraging from them in January needed a blood transfusion .Feb period had to stay off my feet for 4 days. I had been in pain for 9 years with a Doctor who would not listen . This website was a god send to me so many friends told me to try to save my uterus and go less invasive routes but after much reading on this site realized that hysterectomy best option and scheduled 2 weeks later . I ordered the book they offer for free on this site .It was so helpful and read a lot of tips from other people . I really wanted a less invasive hysterectomy but my uterus was to big .I can honestly say I was surprised by the minimal amount of pain I was in it felt like a bad period to me ...You have so much time to prepare and to read . One of the things that I did was take the suggestion of another sister and not read post op and it helped me not be afraid to go in surgery ... One tip is try to listen to your body after your surgery and even if you feel great remember to pamper yourself (easier said than done ) I really wish you the best of luck and
honestly the pain from my fibroids were far greater than this surgery .I hope I helped you.Sorry so lengthy .

I agree with Kristen. The post op board can be pretty scary and a lot of pre op princesses read it and get scared out of their wits. You have to remember that most of us come through our surgery and recovery successfully, with very few complications beyind the typical aches and pains, but the post op board is mostly filled with the concerns of those who have bigger problems.
Having this much advance time to learn and understand what will be happening can be a blessing. I had an emergency hyster and knew nothing about what was happening to my body until it was all over and I could have a long talk with my doc during the days before I was sent home. By then, however, the entire decision of what parts were taken and what parts I kept rested in his hands. I did tell him I did not want my ovaries to go if at all possible, and that worked out for me. My sister is in HRT hell and I did not want that for myself. If I'd had the time to think or learn about hysterectomy in advance, I might have insisted that I keep other parts, too. I am grateful that my experience was successful, though, and I feel like I should thank my GYN every day for saving my life.
for you as you prepare yourself for this!

Even with daVinci realize that you will have had major surgery and having just 5 little incisions can make you think that your recovery won't be as long. My husband's theory is set your bar low so that anything is better than you thought it would be adn I think it's a good way to approach it. If I had really wrapped my head around that this could be a 6 month to a year effort to have everything settle down I probably wouldn't be as stressed at 3.5 months as I am. Take it in small steps..."today I feel better because...."

Recovery time
Thanks for all the replies and tips. I am planning on taking a month off even though I have heard that a Davinci has fast recovery time. My doctor told me about my other options but the surgery seems like the best choice for me. Ive been going through this for 5 years and have had enough. I am keeping my ovaries so no HRT for me. I just cannot wait to have all this bleeding and pain stop. I have my period right now for almost the whole month evey month with maybe a week off if I am lucky. I am scared, but I know my life will be so much better when I have the surgery.

Welcome Dillon40,
I had the davinci and had 4 incisions. The only incision that bothered me was the one located at the upper left hand of the belly button. I asked the dr why that one bothered me so much and she said it was due to this incision is where the instruments moved and the other ones didn't move.
I recovered nicely and haven't had any problems recovering from having the davinci I just had to remember not to lift anything heavy for 3 months. Also DO NOT under ANY circumstances do any housework, cooking, washing cloths, etc. After 3 weeks I was feeling pretty good and thought I could bend over and pick up my undercloths and wash them. That was way too much to do and tour a stitch in that one incision that bothered me so much.
Good luck and waiting for the surgery is the worst. The davinci will be the best decision you could make.

Hey, Dillon!
I'm 41 and suffered from endometriosis and uterine fibroids. I just had the da vinci on 3/5 (TLH and RSO), and feel absolutely fantastic! My surgery was at 8:00 a.m., they were done by 11:00, and I was in my hospital bed watching TV and eating liquids by 1 or 2 that afternoon. I had miminal discomfort that was easily managed by a combo of Norco (narcotic/acetominophen) and Motrin every 6 hrs., and I was up and moving around the rest of that day. They switched me over to solid food for breakfast and by noon, my hubby arrived and I headed home. As tauruslady said, because you feel so well after surgery, you have to bear in mind that you still underwent a major procedure and avoid the temptation of doing too much. Also, I'm a firm believer that your body goes through its own little mourning process every time an organ is removed...and so you need to give it that time to grieve and heal. I'm really fortunate because this is my 5th major surgery in 2 years, and I'm in good physical shape and bounce back very fast. My OB GYN said that he'll reevaluate me at the 2 week mark, and that I should be able to jog and do my light toning weight routine beginning week 3 and be pretty much back up to full activity by then, with the exception of heavy lifting and other "no-no's" that were given to me at the time of discharge.
I'm having a crew come in once and do a thorough cleaning on the house, which will buy me a 6 week window from surgery to recovery and take the pressure off to keep the house clean. I have bad dust allergies and so unfortunately, I'm not someone who can simply let the housework go for a month because my health will suffer. But I really feel terrific and am walking at a slow pace on the treadmill, increasing my time by a few minutes each day. My incisions are hardly tender and the Motrin I'm taking is easily managing that. The biggest thing I noticed is that feeling of internal manipulation that you get from any type of laparoscopic surgery -- almost as though you did too many crunches and woke up the next day sore -- but I'll take that any day over an abdominal incision! All I need to do is cross fingers and hope that the endo doesn't come back (it was my choice and my Dr.'s recommendation to leave the left ovary for hormones because right now, it's healthy and clear), so we'll see. The bottom line is that each of us knows our own bodies best, and your body will tell you when you're doing too much. Also, it's been my experience time and again that if you're in good physical shape and healthy prior to the surgery, you'll recover much quicker and endure less pain and discomfort throughout the healing process.
You will be great!
