Hooray for healing!!

Had a TAH the morning of 8/21 (kept ovaries), and I'm here to agree with all the sisters who have expressed relief - the wait is definitely the worst and I am feeling such a sense of peace now that the surgery is over. Things can only get better from here on out.

I did have to stay in the hospital until Friday - a bit longer than planned - due to low hemoglobin. I had a transfusion on Wednesday and my counts are gradually heading in the right direction, though still only around 8.5 as of Friday.

My biggest piece of advice to those who are awaiting surgery - don't be afraid to take the pain meds. That happy button is your friend - minimize your pain as much as possible so that you can rest.

I'm still taking percocet and Motrin 800 and don't have much of an appetite yet, but I'm up and about taking short walks around the house, etc. I feel much better than I thought I would at this point. I am feeling a definite improvement with each day, and it feels so wonderful to know that I have a new life ahead of me. I'm thankful that I went ahead with the surgery - what a relief and a blessing.

This website has been a god send over the past few months - the support, the information, just knowing you aren't alone in your fears is such a gift. May all of the sisters out there heal well and enjoy their new lives. For those who are awaiting surgery, know that you will soon feel like a new woman. Hang in there.

My surgery, LAVH-BSO was on 8/20 and I already feel like I'm over the hump. I was home after a 24 hr stay and only needed Rx pain meds the first day post-op - just aleve after that has done the trick and I'm NOT being brave. First three days had me feeling tired and fragile, but not bad. Day three was digestive distress day, but friday I felt GOOD and no longer felt like my guts were gonna fall out. Didn't nap that day and made up for it the next day with extra pillow time - guess my energy reserves are low. Taken senekot 2x and a few tums but gastric stuff has been manageable. Started estrace 3 days ago and no probs so far. I'm PSYCHED now that the broken bits are outta there!

'Partial Hyst' Over and Done...

...as of 8/24/07 I am minus a uterus. I have my ovaries so I wont need to do HRT. I was told by my doctors that I had fibroids that my ultrasound did not pick up and they were numerous.

I'm ok with the process. I don't know what happened from the time they wheeled me into anesthesiology (7:30am) to the time I woke up in my room 4:00pm. People kept waking me up for this, that, and the other and I could barely hold a coherent conversation. My surgeon went over the procedure, what I needed to do before she'd let me go home and following up. My sister stopped by and said a few things but I could barely hold my eyes open to talk to her. Morphine is some powerful stuff.

My fibroids had in general kept my blood count at 10 but by the time surgery was over, I was at 6 and I had to have a blood transfusion and stay an extra night. My doctor and I are hoping that my count will elevate now that I am minus the drain of the fribroids.

It's day 2 after and I was released today on condition that I 'pass gas' which surprisingly took a suppository for me to do.

So, I'm home via my sis and nephew. Just blogging here, watching tv and hanging out in bed for the rest of the night. My incisions were neat and should heal fine. I feel tight where they stitched me but I'm not in pain unless I bend or mistakenly use my abs to move.

My last move today is to take vicoden and relax. I'll wake up when I wake up tomorrow. A co-worker is supposed to stop by.

I don't have children and I got the feeling that a couple of the nurses were put off by the fact that I had a hysterectomy. As if I were somehow 'anti-family' when the fact is that it just never happened for me and I'm not your 'have a child out of wedlock' person. How judgemental.

Girl, was that happy button not the bomb! Everytime I woke up, I pressed it and was out for the count (except for the darned interruptions by medical personnel...which were necessary).

My hysterectomy was August 23rd. All that remains is my left ovary and left fallopian tube. I had abdominal surgery. They used my c-section scar. I had endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids, cysts, enlarged uterus, tipped cervix, and heavy and long periods. I arrived home yesterday, August 25th. I came home with a catheter due to some bladder dysfunction. My catheter will be removed this coming Thursday. My belly is very swollen, wow! I look to be in my 2nd trimester! Overall, I feel pretty good and have been resting a lot. Pain meds are working well. My family, friends, and church have all been absolutely supportive and wonderful. I seem to have had 2 minor hot flashes. I suppose I would know if I had a full blown hot flash. My remaining ovary is small and we hope it does it's job. Getting in and out of bed poses the biggest challenge for me at the moment. I have a tummy band which helps. I also have on the leg tights to prevent blood clots.
I love HysterSisters! This site is most amazingly helpful!

3 days post

hello. all. today's sunday evening and I have been in bed. done some walking but still very sore. internal pain kicked in. had been taking stool softeners (should be called stool liquifiers, wow!) finally had BM's. having some nausea and over heating, but still doing well. DH taking wonderful care of me. He just wants me to feel better.

those still waiting, don't be afraid of using the pain meds, they help. don't try to be the strong powerful woman by holding out. It stresses out your body.
be blessed

It's late and I am lying here wide awake! My stomach was cramping something awful. I was so uncomfortable. Walking around the house helped to move the gas and I was finally relieved by a BM. It wasnt painful but the gas beforehand certainly was. Very sharp pains. I feel so much better now. I am lying in bed with the laptop and a heat pad. I think I used the stairs one too many times today. Glad to hear everyone is doing well for the most part.

And for the lady who spoke about the morphine earlier, that was a Godsend at the hospital. It knocked me right out and I didn't become nauseous from it. I do vaguely remember telling one of the nurses that I did not like her and wanted the nurse who was there prior. That wasn't very nice, but she had no personality. I am blaming the morphine for my actions.

Overall, I feel pretty good besides the gas. I swear I have a had a couple of hot flashes and I have my ovaries. I guess they are still asleep but geez hot flashes are no joke! I thought I had had a fever but took my temp and it was normal. I still have a little swelly belly but it has gone down significantly but parts of my stomach are black & purple from bruises. It is quite unsightly! Well thats all for now.

Day 1 at home...

Slept well, woke up at 5:00am. Made a list of things I was going to bring up from down stairs for my bedroom campout. Took a shower and washed my hair (anyone's hair extremely dry? I've been pulling out clumps over the last two days. I think it's the medication and dehydration I experienced after surgery). Sigh, my back hurts and my feet/ankles are swollen like an old lady with 'cankles'. lol Stomach is swollen.

Sitting in bed now surrounded by cell phone, laptop, remote, magazines, applesauce, jello, grapefruit juice and meds. While downstairs I had my Reliv which I had already been taking way before all this started. Links to commercial sites not allowed per Hystersisters TOS.

I'm just going to stay here until the early afternoon. I don't feel like eating heavily yet and god bless my sister, but the soup she made for me yesterday was not good. Bless her heart...she tried. Eventually, I'll order groceries; thank god for Peapod. I just don't want to order a ton of food I'm not even sure I want.

Next trip downstairs will be to get mail, pay condo assessment, scarf down something and call it lunch and take out garbage. That'll be enough for one day. Anybody that comes by can grab the key from the doorman and as long as I see them on the monitor they can come up. They are graciously allowing my guests to park as long as they want in front of my building.

Had my TAH BSO on 8/21, home since Friday. Was surprised to wake up with an abdominal, since a LAVH had been planned. Had a fibroid in a difficult location, and my uterus had adhered to my bowel, so they decided it was too dangerous. Glad I didn't know before - I was afraid of abdominal surgery, but have to say it was not as bad as I feared. Have been using only occaisional ibuprofin for pain since I've been home, and am up and about the house and walking down the block with DH twice a day. Do have swelly belly, and came home with an extra 8 lbs, (fluids?!) which I would rather not be hauling around. Only real complaint with where I am now is not sleeping all that well. I'm a side sleeper, and that just causes too much pulling, so I have to sleep on my back. Only got 6 1/2 hours last night (in two stretches) and that isn't enough for me. Trying to get a nap, every afternoon, but would like a better night's sleep. Have ordered the belly band, and wonder if sleeping with it might help. Otherwise may have to get a sleeping pill. Thanks to all on this site for all the info and advice posted.
