Well, Joan, you did better than I did. I took today off to make it a three-day week end. My boss encouraged me and I didn't need much encouragement! I took it easy all day and I feel better than I have at all this week. It was a good decision. I think I can do all five days next week, but if not, maybe another 3-day week end!

oh mizfish...lucky you to have that sort of boss. I'm afraid I did see mine yesterday as we had a meeting after school. I was late because (1) I had to drive an hour to get there (2) I stopped at home first to change my pants back to the maternity ones and sit with the ice pack for a half hour or so. She, however, never said, "Oh poor Joan..why dont you skip this 'cause it's stupid anyhoe and get a sub for tomorrow"..I sure would like her a lot better if she'd said that!
It appears that we're "same day sisters" but you had the open H and I had laproscopic with the robot. As much as they tout the robot and laproscopy, it doesnt sound as if the recovery is REALLY much different. Does it sound like that to you? I had...TLH-BSO-something else..and daVinci. too many letters. Joan

You're right, Joan, I am lucky to have such a boss. You're also right about having too many letters to describe our procedures. We're turning into an "alphabet soup" society. Every test or new theory has an alphabet...MEAP, IDEA, IEP, etc. etc. I'm so glad I took yesterday off. I feel great today. At least until I looked outside this morning. It's very pretty outside, but it looks like a Christmas card! The plows went by early and I now have a nice big bank at the end of the driveway. Even DH, who is usually so anal about getting the drive clear immediately says to wait it out and let it melt. It's suppose to get up to the 40s by Monday. It takes a long time for Spring to reach the U.P. All you ladies from "down south" will be envying me in the summer though. Beautiful days all summer long with the highs in the mid-80s & a nice fresh breeze off the Straits of Mackinac every day. One day, maybe I'll go somewhere warm for the winter and just come here in the summer. Well, I actually like snow, so maybe not. Maybe just a break from winter for a few weeks. Oh well, for today, I'll just hunker down and watch it snow.

Well Mizfish, I'm hardly down south..I'm in Saratoga NY...just barely south of where I lived in Maine for my first 48 years.
Today is sunny and warm-ish here..we had snow earlier in the week but it melted. I can still see some in my backyard which borders on "forever wild" even tho I'm in a standard ticky tacky development.
One of my internet Morgan horse friends is U.P. resident. She has written several books, Nancy Bailey, and is also a fabulous artist. Clifford, Return to Manitou are the first two titles. Even non horse folks have just got to love her writing..I think I cry at least once a chapter. The third book is about the cat show world, but I can't remember the title, and it's really funny!
Of being a "snow bird", apparently folks from both Michigan and Maine end up in the Naples area of FL..not sure why but when my mother was traveling back and forth, she seemed to meet many people from Michigan.
To be on topic...last night my waist measured 40 inches! this morning it's 36...hope it keeps going down! Stay warm and dry! Joan

Hi everyone,

I’m at 5 and ½ weeks, and here’s where I stand: I’ve been sleeping pretty well all along, but I still have trouble with my bowels. I have a little old dog who takes a poop every single time I let him outside, and I sooo envy him. I had a couple of days earlier this week when I was really down in the dumps, but I feel better now. Oddly, those were the days when I had the fewest hot flashes. The days I’ve felt better emotionally are the days I’ve been hot and cold continually. I’ll take the heat problems over the emotional problems any day.

I also made a trip to the beauty parlor this week – got a great color job – and I’ve been using fake tanner to take away the pasty. I may not feel normal yet, but I’m beginning to look that way (I hope)!

Friday morning (yesterday), because of the snow and wind we had in Minnesota, I used an exercise bike instead of taking my usually walk. Ever since, I’ve had pain on the left side at my incision. I can’t figure it out, since the bike seemed to keep my entire abdomen isolated from movement. I know I should have called my doctor, but my son is home from college and I didn’t want to have to go in. I have my follow-up appointment next Wednesday, but if it still hurts on Monday, I’ll call then.

My son took me out for my birthday yesterday (50!), and then brought me back home to a surprise birthday party. What a blast! I haven’t had a birthday party since I was a little kid. He had some help from my sister planning it, but he (a 21 year old college student) did a lot of it on his own.

Anyway, the party kept me up and moving around a lot, but I’m hoping a day of taking it easy today will get rid of the pain. Actually, after some milk of magnesia relief, it feels a little more like the burning feeling I’ve had in the past, now. It’s still hard to believe that next week I’m supposed to be released for everything if I still have these odd pains, though.

Anyway, glad to hear everyone got through work last week, even if it was tough. Good luck to those of you who are going back next week. Yes, Ravioli, you’ll get through it fine. I actually went back to work on day 12. That sounds ludicrous, I know, but I just made sure that I wasn’t doing anything I wasn’t also doing at home (kept it to walking and sitting). The only difference is that I had someone besides my dog and cats to talk to!

Take care everyone,

Margaret

On the weather issue, I am down here in sunny florida. It is about 81 outside with a nice breeze. I just got done laying out and working on my base tan for this year. It is absolutely beautiful outside today. I am sure, as you said, that during the summer I will be jealous of the weather up north. It gets sooooooo hot and humid here during the summer.

Thankfully I am not having any BM issues. It is actually better for me now than before my surgery. The first few weeks were rough, but not anymore. I hope that all "clears up" for those of you still having issues.

I still get tired and kinda sore some times. While I was laying out sunning the front of me, my low stomach kinda stretched out and was a little sore. Other than that, I seem to be getting a little better each day or so.

I still can't wait to take a bath and have SEX though! I am finally ready for the nookie, but according to the doctor I still have to wait a little over 2 weeks. BOO HOO HOO!!! I venture to say the hubby will be quite happy when I am finally able to.

Well, I have to go have a chat with the hubby now about our 16 year old son. He has it in his head that he wants to drop out of school. YIKES! There is always something to stress about.

Take care,
Theresa

Yes, it was beautiful today down here in Florida. I remember when we were in the UP. It was quite a culture shock for a Floridian. I ended up having a white Halloween, white Thanksgiving, white Christmas, birthday, and Easter! There was even snow on the ground back in the shadowy parts in the woods in May when I graduated from NMU! We spent 3 years there and came home with two little Yoopers! (My two older kids were born there).

I am feeling fantastic this week. I was feeling kind of icky last weekend, but that seems to have gone away. Alot of the little twinges are leaving, but the swelly belly seems to be rearing itself.

I go for my post op on next Wed, too. Last week I was finally interested in sex. It was pretty bad!!!! So I am hoping the doc releases me this week. Hubby will be out of town until Friday--then watch out!!!

It seems that my recovery was at about 70% by the second or third week and it has slowly improved to about 80%. I think that last 20% is going to take that 6 months to a year. Will be nice when it is all behind us.

I know that taking a good calcium with magnesium has helped keep my BMs going just fine.

As for riding a bike--stationary or real one--it, too, causes pain on my left side. You really do use your core when you ride a bike. Plus, any time I am sitting or bent over/crunched in the middle, I end up with the same pain. My best treatment for it is to just lay out flat and stretch my abdomen carefully. It gets the kinks out.

Hi,
I woke up from surgery crying also. I couldn't breathe! I felt like I was gasping for my last breath. I felt terrible and scared. The male nurse was no comfort. Finally, a female nurse came and she comforted me and I was able to relax and breathe normally. I was in the hospital for three days. I couldn't sleep the first night. I cried all night. I was in so much pain. Once I got home, it didn't get any better. I was in pain for the first two weeks. I was constipated and had terrible gas pain. Depression came and I felt all alone. I am better now, and will be going back to work on April 28th.

Hope things get better for you.
It hasn't been easy for me. My doc now says 12 week recovery. Friday was my first full day doing everything I normally do and I was in bed by 8pm and I am still all crampy and spotting today. I feel better in some ways than before the surgery, but am so used to being able to do a million things a day that this slow recovery is disappointing. Guess it's different when you have two little kids, there truly is no rest time.

Glad that so many of you are feeling wonderful. Still believe this is a fantastic surgery. I have a very high incision that is above my belly button as well as the other two low ones, anyone else have this?
Thanks,D

Hi everyone, and thanks heaps Margaret for your words of encouragement.
Back to work tomorrow and I'm much happier about going back now. I felt wonderful yesterday (the closest to normal I've been since the op!) and was up early to hit the shops.

I found a glorious pair of inexpensive black trousers with elastic arond the waist to hide the swelly belly, and a nice new shirt that was long enough to be comfortable in too! Also went for a longer drive to the other side of town to order my new work shirts - all us library girls are getting smart new rust-coloured shirts with our library logo on it. We decided we get a new image seeing we're getting a brand new library!!

I also drove on to K-Mart to stock up on more outsize "granny knickers" to tide me over - as we very well know, comfort is paramount, especially if you're looking forward to sitting back in front of a computer all day!! Then more grocery shopping with my sister - who did indeed push the trolley and lug the bags!! And then some washing when I got home. Needless to say after all this exertion I passed out for the rest of the afternoon and snored loudly on my invalid couch till sunset. Then I drove around to see some relatives for dinner.

I feel okay today, but have much less energy so am taking things easy. I have been guilty of carrying a couple of baskets of washing out to the laundry - so will desist from this dubious activity for the rest of the day!

Hope everyone is feeling okay today, and continuing to get better and better. If I have enough energy tomorrow evening after my first day at work, I'll try to give an update on how I survived!! There's always the comforting thought that if I have any problems/or if a pile of books collapses on top of me, the whole library is always swarming with doctors, medical students, nurses and other health-type dudes who can be guaranteed to
render immediate emergency assistance!!

Take care everyone!!
Ravioli
