Anybody got a horse?
I have a retired racehorse and I was working with him last night in the arena. Not riding. Suddenly he spooked and bolted and knocked me down. I've had him 9 or 10 years and this has never happened before. No harm done and we continued with the lesson. But what if this had been after my surgery?! How many months is it going to be before I can do more than pat his nose over the stall door? Fortunately, I board, so his day-to-day care is taken care of. And I've got some people who can give him some extra attention while I can't, hold him for the vet and farrier, etc. But usually I'm at the barn 3 or 4 nights a week. I guess I'm just feeling sad for me and him.

Re: Anybody got a horse?
I don't have a horse but 12 of them. I am a barrel racer and we used to raise performance horses a few years ago. The horse market is not that great so our stallion is just turned out and enjoying his 20's.
Your horse spooking in the arena is not a surprise as even the most bombproof horses can have their days when they spook. They are prey animals so it is hard-wired into their nature.
I don't know when you had your surgery or what is going on with your health but even being around horses(or any animal) brings a calmness, do keep it up. Take in that wonderful horse smell while you are healing, it will do wonders for you.
Hugs

Hi mst3k, I have seen your horsey avatar before.
Yes, they will sometimes decide that something they've seen 100 times is suddenly their mortal enemy and wants to eat them!
12 is quite a herd and must keep you plenty busy.

Re: Anybody got a horse?
Actually, 12 is way down from a few years ago when we had 30 something. Where do you live? Were you riding a lot before your surgery? I have had a very rough time trying to get hormones balanced and I kind of put my riding on the side burner but I am getting closer to feeling balanced so I will be back at it this weekend! We have a ranchhand to help with our ranch so I don't really have to do much but ride and show the horses. I'm very grateful to have him.

Re: Anybody got a horse?
Have you ever dealt with sarcoids? I think my gelding Louie has some on his sheath. I was like, horse, you're doing this NOW? NOW??? I was not too happy when I researched treatment options. The vet is scheduled to come out soon to do the spring thing at the barn and he is going to take a look. Not sure when the barn owner has scheduled -- in the next couple weeks I think. Usually I am there for that but I don't think I'll be up to travelling to the barn and standing around waiting, even though someone else is holding the horse.
I might have to look into some long-acting sedatives for him to get him through whatever treatment. He is usually a pretty good boy about things but I have no desire to get my head kicked in while trying to treat his sheath (if it's painful).
I haven't done much riding in a while, but I've taught Louie several tricks and do some groundwork with him. He is 17 but still thinks he's on the track sometimes.

Re: Anybody got a horse?
Have not dealt with sarcoids but several friends have and those suckers seem to always want to come back. I hope your vet can help you out. And dealing with the sheath, why don't you try twitching first before you have to work with any tranquilizers?
