Poll: How much did your hysterectomy cost in the United States?
My total bill was $13,335.20 (I was there for two nights). My out-of-pocket was $250.
(((Billee)))
In the US, there really are no provisions for people who cannot afford to pay for medical care. We have a whole class of people who are referred to as the "working poor." They have jobs, but can barely make ends meet, let alone afford health insurance or pay medical bills. There are some government programs, like Medicaid, but you have to have a very low or no income to qualify. Ironically, most of the working poor make too much money (sometimes barely) to qualify. When you reach age 65, you are automatically eligible for a program called Medicare, but that is only better than nothing. It currently does not cover prescription meds. I have a good friend who is a Canadian National. Although she and her hushand have every intention of remaining in the US, she will not become a citizen for the very reason that should she or one of her children (also Canadians) suddenly find themselves uninsured, they can always go back to Saskatchewan to get medical treatment. She has nothing but good things to say about your system.

Poll: How much did your hysterectomy cost in the United States?
Mine came to just under $25,000 for the TVH, BSO, Sparc (bladder procedure), a&p and perineal repairs. I stayed 2 days (entered hospital Thursday am and went home Saturday am). I have not gotten the (separate) bill for the doc yet.
Thank goodness, my insurance covered it all.

Bills
Wow, it is so wild to see the variance in costs.
Hi, Limesue we share the same surgery date! Wish my surgery would cost as little as yours, I know it won't because my emergency gallbladder surgery was almost 10,000.00 dollars with all the little this and thats.
I will let you all know what mine cost when I start getting the bills.

Poll: How much did your hysterectomy cost in the United States?
Ladies, I've worked in healthcare and there are a lot of reasons (not good reasons, mind you, but reasons) for the variation in bills. Many providers (hospitals and physicians) are on a fixed rimbursement plan with the insurance companies. Sometimes they are paid a percentage of the total bill. So, if it cost the hospital $1000 to do something and they need to make $100 more than that so they can buy new equipment next year and $400 to pay for the many uninsured forlks who come to the ER, they may bill for $3000 because they are only going to get paid 50% of the bill. Some have a payment plan where they get paid a flat rate no matter how high the bill so those bills tend to be lower (they get paid $1000 whether the bill is $1000 or $5000). Physicians payment plans are also widely variable. A lot depends upon where in the US you are and how the insurance companies and other payors in your area are writing contracts with the providers.
It is very confusing and difficult. With 1/3 of Americans without insurance but hospitals are required by law to provide care to anyone who arrives in the ER with an urgent problem, If a person doesn't have insurance they tend to not get care until it is an emergency! Hospitals are having a very hard time and many are losing money.
It is a very bad situation.

Same with my HMO. they paid the hospital the whole 13000+, but the doctor, who charged 5000.0 was only paid 1300 - and he's the onewho did the work the work. It just makes no sense!

I also thank God above for health insurance. My husband has coverage for both of us through his work and we only have to pay about $75 a month for both of us. When you have surgery I do swear that every medical professional in the entire county comes in and takes a poke at you and sends in a bill. I have gotten statements from people I never saw, and laboratories I never heard of. Thankfully I used all in-network doctors and facilities, so I had to pay only a couple of co-payments of $10 and $10 for my prescriptions. My hospital bill was for around $8,000 for Monday, Tuesday and I came home early on Wednesday. Seems a little pricey to me. I am especially grateful for my health insurance because when I went for my annual exam this year my mammo showed up some suspicious areas and I had to have a biopsy (negative for cancer) and then my gyn sent me for ultrasounds at this other hospital to determine if I had fibroids which I did and resulted in my hyst. I figure my insurance has paid about $15,000 on me this year. Whew, that would have driven me into bankruptcy!
