Pain after exercise

Hello, I have been having pain/aches at the hysterectomy side after moderate running and jogging 14 weeks post hysterectomy. Had to take Motrin. Not sure if the pain is related to the exercise. How did you all resume exercise, I have been gaining Wt. fast than I ever did and just had a baby day of hysterectomy. Trying to manage the weight. Anyone input will be helpful

Re: Pain after exercise

and

One of the hardest things to wrap our brains around is just how long this recovery takes, and there's nothing magical about our 6 or 8 week exam. Even after our release, full healing takes 4-6 months, maybe longer. I didn't fully buy into it either, until I had a few more months in the rear view mirror. The article How Long Will the Pain Last After Hysterectomy? is not really so much about the pain, but rather the view from 36,000 feet about this recovery. Another good article is Returning to Real Life After Hysterectomy. Key word... gradually.

I'd get dull aches and swelling through 8 weeks, and beyond that whenever I did more than my body was ready to handle. Sometimes it was activity specific, like power washing the front porch or shoving a 24-pack of soda over my head on a high shelf. One time it was an 18-hour day of working, driving, attending an outdoor concert and driving back home. Last time at the mat with those symptoms was after kicking up the intensity of a core routine, and that happened at 5 months. Whenever that happened, I'd take ibuprofen and rest more for the next few days.

As for running, I retained my cervix - no vaginal cuff - and I'd worked up to walking 3 miles through 8 weeks. At 8 weeks I tried running intervals (3 minutes) and kept my gait to a sort of shuffle run to minimize the bouncing. Surprisingly it worked, and by 12 weeks I could run 3 miles, albeit at a slower pace. But as I said above, certain activities would trigger that swelling and dull aches for a few months.

I'd say that if you're hurting after a run, you're probably doing more than your body is ready for. Rest for a few days, and when you resume slow the pace or the impact, or decrease the distance or time. Unlike athletic training, pushing until you feel that burn doesn't make you get past this faster. What you don't want is to increase the risk of adhesions which could cause issues down the road. That happened to a neighbor of mine - she had to have surgery later because her rectum was all twisted upon itself. She admitted she didn't take it easy after her hysterectomy.
