Yeah my doctors office has called once in person, once automated, and messaged through MyChart. They have been very supportive.

Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates May 10-May 16,2021
Slowly getting off pain meds but not quite there yet. I’ve been sleeping right through times to take pills in the night, but I also wake up shaky and weak and nauseous and feeling awful. Yesterday it slowly improved throughout the day, only to come back this morning again - woke up shaky and a little nauseous and cramping and feeling exhausted. Anyone else?
Otherwise, I *think* I’m doing okay? No fevers, no weird pains, my belly is very swollen but not hard or unusual, my bowels are very slowly working again and I’m taking a stool softener. Does this all sound normal? I’ve been resting in bed most of the time but getting up to do circuits in my living room every 4-6 hours or so. I think I just feel like I should be feeling way better than this by now. Ty!

Well...yes, I'm having some weirdness off and on.
Today it's just some numbness in my hand, in the two fingers right above where they did the IV, but the fingers are slowly waking up. I can move them like normal, they have some feeling. I'm at the pins and needles stage. Bowel wise, I'm still doing a stool softener once daily, but it seems like that's ok too. I'm making sure to get my water, drinking cranberry juice also to make sure I don't get a UTI (this is my own preventative after having a catheter). My stomach is sore, I missed one dose of the ibruprofen 800 last night and today woke up in time for the next dose and was surprised I wasn't in more pain, so I guess I'll start tapering off of the pain meds now. My belly is still very swollen. I still get gas but it's more the normal variety. Nothing super painful. I've had a little nausea on and off, but that seems to happen after taking my pain med. It's not major nausea, ...but it may also just be a general feeling of weakness and I know to expect that anyway because I was at severe anemia, and required two iron infusions, one per week, in the two weeks prior to surgery. For the most part, from the articles here and from talking to my mom, and other friends of mine that have had a hysterectomy, my feelings are normal. Add that to some up and down emotions, which are normal also, and I'd say it's probably within normal? I'd check up with your Dr if it's extreme nausea, extreme pain, or ER if it's the things they told us to watch for at discharge, like palpitations or heavy 1 pad an hour bleeding (in these cases I was advised to call 911)
Sending you love and hugs

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates May 10-May 16,2021
Constipation is a big concern after major surgery, and even more so after hysterectomy, as we have swelling & stitches down below... which means we don’t want to push or strain. Eat high fiber foods (pears, almonds, peas, bran, prune juice), drink lots of water, walk as you feel able, and take stool softeners. Be careful to only push very gently. If nothing is “happening”, get up and walk around the house for a few minutes, then try again.

Gas pain can be horrible! For many it settled in their shoulders and for a few days it was their chief complaint. Some sisters find relief by wetting a hand towel and microwaving it so it's warm (but not hot) and then placing it where you are feeling the most discomfort from gas. The moist heat may help to draw the gas out. Another idea is using a moist heating pad (which can be bought at most drugstores). For intestinal gas: peppermint or ginger tea, rare Gas X and walking can be the best ways to get relief.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates May 10-May 16,2021
1 week after surgery and feeling less gas pain. Abdomen is softer and less distended. BM are soft due to miralax and stool softeners but quite painful. Deep ache in abdomen is kept at bay with Motrin, roaxin and percocet. Tomorrow my catheter comes out and I expect it will decrease bladdrr spasms. I am now urinating around the catheter at times. I noticed my urine has changed from clear to cloudy so ill have them check for infection at appointment. I have frequent urge to urinate. I am capping to cathter and empty bladder at 3 to 4 hour intervals as directed by doctor. Sometimes I need to empty sooner due to feeling bladder pressure. I walk around my house a few times a day including the stairs but otherwise rest. Should I be getting up to more walking now? Praying for all here to have a blessed and healing day.

Hi there. Maybe you should not try to get off pain meds for a few more days so you can have easier recovery for first 2 weeks post op. I also tried to skip pain med last night but regretted it at 3 am . Its best to keep pain managed with regular meds every 6 hours for first week or 2. Take the nausea pills if beaded. Did you dr. Give you Zofran? That helped me the first 4 days post op. Take care of yourself. Hope all continues to heal progressivly.

Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates May 10-May 16,2021
You are right, I will be going back to taking my pain meds regularly, per doctors orders. They only gave me 14 oxy for after my surgery but they are giving me a refill. Apparently trying to be a hero does not work with a hysterectomy. Haha!
Question:
Is it normal to have bladder spasms become a little worse as everything else gets better? I still have some burning sensations when my bladder is full and I have to go, but it’s relieved after I pee and it doesn’t burn as I pee. My doc did say that if it doesn’t go away in a couple of days that she will check for infection but I also wanted to get others experience. I had a catheter during surgery and a cystoscopy, and my surgery took two hours longer because of the scar tissue on my bladder.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates May 10-May 16,2021
I had LAVH on 5/11 at 11 a.m. I'm 58, and the massive fibroid we were watching just kept getting bigger, so everything came out. The procedure went will, although a little longer because that fibroid was even bigger than expected and it was more difficult to remove vaginally than anticipated.
I ended up staying one night in the hospital because I was so out of it but by midnight, I was urinating and walking around with my IV stand. The pain was tolerable with the help of Ibuprofen, Tylenol, Neurontin, and Oxycodone. I came home with those meds the next morning. There was some bleeding but nothing substantial after that first day.
I slept a lot on Wednesday and Thursday but then developed insomnia. On Saturday, I discontinued the Neurontin and Oxycodone. This and a very small dose of a sleeping aid have helped me restore my sleeping and digestive systems back to normal. I cannot say how grateful I am now for regular bowel movements, as the worst pain seems to come from trapped gas!
As far as movement, I walk around my house and go up and down short flights of stairs. Yesterday was one week since my surgery, and I walked about 2,000 steps total. The type A woman inside of me wants to push it but I am not listening to her anymore, as the last time I pushed a Swiffer with my foot I paid for it!
The things that seem to be helping me get closer to feeling like a human being are getting off of the "big" painkillers (I still take Tylenol and Ibuprofen until Friday), drinking a TON of watered down lemonade, drinking broth, eating fresh fruit, avoiding dairy, and taking a tablespoon on psyllium every day in some warm soy milk.

UTIs vs. spasms/irritation are so confusing. While you're giving it time, flush that bladder out! Often people can stop a mild UTI by dilution and acidification of the urine. So hydrate and void often as is comfortable. While you keep an eye out for any more serious indicators.
