Going in tomorrow-March 4

Hi, I'm new here. Going in for a TAH tomorrow courtesy Australian public health system. I have been on the waiting list for non-urgent surgeries over a year, finally it's my turn! My problem is fibroids and painful periods-I had my tubes tied when I was 21 and never regretted it so I am thrilled to get rid of the periods! At this point I am in the "just get it over and done with" stage.

After reading the posts I am really worried about how helpless I will be afterwards. My husband is from the Pacific Islands and illiterate so he doesn't have a driver's license and he can't use things like ATM, credit cards, etc. I had to buy 3 weeks of groceries. He will be good for doing all the physical things like cooking, cleaning, getting me up the stairs (we have a high-set house). I know I will be desparate to drive asap afterwards just to get things done. We don't have family or the kind of friends you can ask for huge favours-it's just us two.

I decided to fast from solid foods for 24 hours before the op to hopefully avoid constipation, that is a huge worry. When I took Panadene with codeine I used to have big problems with that.

Anybody have any ideas on how to deal with this? Things I need to do before I go in? I will check back in the morning before I go in.

Hi Tiki

Welcome to Hyster Sisters!!

First - please don't fast without your doctor's permission. You could be doing more harm than good. What you eat in the 24 hours prior to surgery won't have an effect on being constipated from pain meds afterwards.

It sounds as if you've thought of ways to help your DH take care of you, but I also want to urge you not to try to drive too quickly afterwards. You will have many stitches which need to have time to heal, and most doctors will not allow you to drive for at least two weeks, if not longer. Please let your neighbors and co-workers know that you may need help - most people are very willing to help out, if you let them know that you need it.

I hope that you've had a chance to read the Pre-Op Hints and the Post-Op Hints. They are full of great advice that will help you to prepare for your surgery and recovery.

You'll be in my thoughts and prayers for a successful and uneventful surgery and recovery.

Thanks for your kind words of support. I did mention to the doctor how worried I am about constipation, I have had problems with it before during my period when I take panadeine.

He also said that complcations can happen with a full bowel and I wanted to spare myself a bowel prep-which I am not having thank God! I will request high fibre food in hospital.

Well, I am outta here in an hour-have to take the bus since I can't drive home. I don't know the neighbors at all-I am one of those people who comes home from work, fixes dinner for me and DH and watches TV or goes online all the time. I am not very outgoing, I get along with people but just don't have a lot of deep relationships that I can ask for that kind of help. My family lives far away from Brisbane.

Will let you know how it turns out when I get back-hopefully on Sunday-remember Australia is a day ahead of the USA.
