Epidural???

Can anyone tell me if they do a epidural for abdominal hyst???? My doctor's office has not scheduled a date for my surgery yet. Should know something tomorrow. (hopefully) So I really haven't had a chance to ask too many questions. Just had my second opinion yesterday and the doctor that delivered two of my children said hyst would be highly recommended...

Hope you can help.

Epidural???

I am scheduled for 7:30 tomorrow (Friday) morning for a TAH BSO. I had my pre-op at the hospital this morning and spoke with the anesthesiologist. He said that he plans to do an epidural with general, unless I want to be awake. Ummmm, no, I don't think so. I would rather sleep for this one. I was wondering why I needed an epidural at all and he explained that if they can inject the morphine into the spine, they do not have to use as much and therefore you are not as likely to have a bad reaction to it.

Hope this helped.

Epidural???

I had an epidural for SAH/BSO with major repairs due to endo. I am allergic to general anesthesia so I didn't really have much choice. Since I don't like how those "twilight" drugs make me feel, I declined those.

The only time I needed more pain meds was when the Dr opened the retractor beyond what the epidural had numbed.

Yes, I was awake the entire 2 hours, mostly talking to the anesthesiologist(spelling).

The procedure was a little uncomfortble in spots, and just plain weird in other spots, but entirely doable. I had NO nausea during or after the surgery.

Both my Drs called me the day before surgery and explained what they thought would be the best anesthesia for me. Although they didn't think it was a good idea to not consent to the "twilight" meds, they did go along with my decision. (They were concerned I wouldn't be able to handle surgery knowing what was going on. They became very comfortable with the fact that I could handle it and things went well.)

Whatever type of anesthesia you choose, be sure YOU are comfortable with what is done. Talk to your surgeon and the anesthesiologist before surgery and ask every question you want.
They are there for you!

Epidural???

My anesthesiologist (how DO you spell that????) spoke with me about what he though would be best for me.

He gave me a spinal block with "light" sleep. A little sting as the needle went in my back. Immediately I felt a warm, tingling sensation down my bottom and legs. Nurse had to lift my legs back onto the bed. Laid down, a mask was placed over my nose and mouth and was told... "Have a nice sleep".

I remember waking up on route to my hospital room. Felt slight nausea, but no !!!! It worked well for me.

Your anesthesiologist will probably discuss what he/she thinks is best for you at the time and may ask you if you have any preferences.

Best wishes for a successful surgery.
