Just found out I need a hysterectomy
Hi. I'm not sure if I should be doing this right now. My doctor's nurse called me 4 hours ago to tell me that my biopse shows abnormal cells, and I will need do remove the affected tissue, or have a hysterectomy. I decided to have the hysterectomy. I'm 53, and I think it will give me more peace of mind. But I'm scare, my family lives in another country, and I don't know how to tell my 3 grown sons. I'm not sure even if my abnormal cells means cancer. I have an appointment with my doctor next week. I'm sorry, I'm just a little nervous.

Re: Just found out I need a hysterectomy
G,
Nervous is normal. So is worried, scared, distracted, and down right distraught. Some people go with the flow and others go into panic mode. Post your thoughts, questions, experiences, and comments. Read, read, read posts, and research. It will help especially after you have had a more detailed talk with your doctor.
As for your sons every family is different as is every son, but you are their mama and know them best. Our family has an honestly policy. They love you and care for you. They will want the best for you. And, yes they will worry for you.
I am sorry your family is so far away. I hope you have a circle of support that you can depend on. If not, this site will help you will education, moral support, and just plain sisterhood.
Wishing you the best in health and all else.

Re: Just found out I need a hysterectomy
P.S.
I forgot to mention - I have abnormal cells. So far it hasn't meant cancer but it may mean cancer. After my hyster and pathology I will find out about the abnormal cells on my cervix. I also have a complicated cyst that may be cancerous, but won't know till after surgery. Abnormal doesn't equal cancer. It can be non cancer or pre cancer, etc.
Or at least that is my understanding. Hope it helps.

Re: Just found out I need a hysterectomy
I'm 55 and had the same thing. Just had my surgery 6/21 and so glad I did. It went so much better than I ever I thought it would. For me at my age, knowing I was past child bearing age, I did not want to worry all the time about developing cancer. It just made more sense to have everything out. I have a grown son and he was very responsive and caring. I read everything I could find beforehand. Understanding it all will help. This board has been a great resource so don't hesitate to post.

Re: Just found out I need a hysterectomy
Your feelings are completely understandable. I'd have a hard time making a decision after a phone call with a nurse - when you go to dr, bring someone along with you for support, with a list of questions & a place to jot answers. Always consider getting a 2nd opinion.
I've lived a continent away from my family, and I was so upset when I found out bad news had been withheld. Everyone family's different, but my vote, even though I don't know you, is to share the info/feelings with your sons.
