Question about menstration after LAVH

No - You won't have a period without your uterus. Your uterus was the organ that was being shed monthly producing the bleeding. Remember - no question is dumb - not asking is!
Good luck with your surgery and don't be afraid to ask your dr. any questions you may have. Be assured that they have heard them all!

Question about menstration after LAVH

Mary is right, NO you will not have a period. It apparrently can be true that if you retain the cervix, that you can have mini periods, but not when the uterus and cervix are being taken. Good luck and keep us posted

Question about menstration after LAVH

No question is too dumb. I'm a nurse and I had to think about the answer. No, you will not have a "period" since the uterus which sheds the lining (blood/fluid) is removed. You will continue to ovulate and experience pre-menstral symptoms (if you had any). The egg will just be re-absorbed by the body. Another person asked about what happens to sperm if the cervix and uterus are removed. The surgeon will leave a "stump" at the end of the vagina. The sperm will enter the vaginal canal only.

Don't feel Bad...

When I found out I was having this surgery, I was talking about it with my sister in law. She was supposed to have this done several years ago. She said that her doctor said that if tubes and ovaries were left, she would still have periods. I told her to fire him and get a new one!!! I gently explained to her how the uterus and things work. I was a bit suprised to find out what her doctor told her!! Periods were the whole reason she was considering it. The moral of my story is that a lot of the mis information, and/or lack of any info can sometimes be attributed to the very people who are supposed to know all the answers. At the very least to the simplest questions.

Question about menstration after LAVH

for Kelkie (and others)

It's possible your sister in law misunderstood her doctor. Many patients do. No one who went to medical school believes you will still bleed without a uterus. To clarify: you will not get a period (bleeding) without a uterus, but if you keep your ovaries you WILL continue to "cycle". So, for example, if you had PMS before a hysterectomy but keep your ovaries, you probably will still have it. However, many women feel that their PMS symptoms improve when the uterus is removed.
