with an lavh, you have no choice about keeping your cervix. it is always removed during that type of surgery. if you had an abdominal or other types of laparoscopic hyterectomies, you would have the choice of keeping it or not.

Hi. I had my LAVH on Sept 11th. It just depends on what they find when they go in. Too much scar tissue, finding endo, sometimes if uterus is too large or too large fibroids could cause them to switch to TAH. They do whatever is best for you. I had a 16 week size uterus and very large fibroids. My doc was able to do it all via LAVH, but it took four hours, and she had to basically cut everything into pieces.

Good luck!

your dr probably feels like your uterus and cervix can be removed through your vagina..its a less invasive type of surgery than an abdominal cut. it generally has a quicker recovery.

Here's what happened when I got to the castle. After signing in I was taken to a little prep room by a nice friendly nurse and was asked to get changed - into a hospital gown and some slipper sox. The nurse asked if I was chilly and brought a warm blanket. Another nurse came in and started an IV, took some blood. Next the anesthesiologist came in and introduced himself, along with an aneshesiologist nurse. They told me exactly what they were going to be doing, made sure I asked all of the questions I wanted to, did everything possible to put me at ease. Promised nothing at all would be done until I was fast asleep and I would not feel a thing. These were all amazing, calm, supportive, wonderful people. My surgeon and her team came in, introduced themselves( I had met the surgeon but not the rest of the team), asked if I had any questions, went through a brief play by play of exactly what would happen. Everyone was positive and upbeat. Next I was wheeled into the operating room - that's as far as my DH could come. Inside the OR, they had me scoot up onto the OR table. The anesthesiologist was there the whole time talking to me. He had me get comfy and cozy and that's the last thing I remember. They did not position me, catheterize or anything until I was 100% out. Next thing I knew I was waking up - kind of in and out and was being told it was all over and I was doing great. The next few hours were pretty much a blur...but I do remember being wheeled up to my room. All of the nurses, Dr's, lab techs etc were absolutely awesome.

I had my LAVH on Aug 29, kept my cervix. I think the best thing to do about knowing what is being taken and why, is to ask your doc. As for the changing in plans for surgery, I think all docs say it in case they can't remove every thing vaginally.
But for knowing what is being removed, your doc should let you know ahead of time and if not, ASK. You should always be informed about everything the doc is going to do or might have to do.
Good luck with it all.
