Adhesions after hysterectomy?

Are adhesions equally likely with both an abdominal and a vaginal hysterectomy?

Re: Adhesions?

Hi wcw20 -

I do not know if one type of surgery creates more adhesions than another. Here is an article on Adhesions following Hysterectomy.

I had a TAH BSO, and they put a mixture of my own blood plus something else inside my body cavity that they said reduced the formation of adhesions. I did get a minor amount, but not very many.

Re: Adhesions?

Thanks. I had read the article and it didn't really say. I'm not sure there's an answer.

Re: Adhesions?

I'm not sure there's an answer either. My surgeon was determined to do a TVH so I would have no incisions. I asked him to do it laparoscopically but he insisted this would be best and would give me the best chance for a good recovery and no adhesions.

My new GYN believes one of my ovaries has adhered to my vaginal cuff, and has been causing me pain. I was very careful during recovery and followed my restrictions religiously. It could be some of us are just prone to adhesions.

Re: Adhesions after hysterectomy?

I was also concerned about adhesions before surgery and am somewhat wary now (I had my surgery one week ago). I guess the fewer locations that are exposed are probably better which is what my doctor told me. But regardless of abdominal, laparscopic, davinci or vaginal, you are going to have something removed, which means some level of exposure as sugarandspice has indicated.

Regardless of what you decide, hope for the best.
