Re: Lap Hysterectomy: Does everyone stay overnight at the hospital?

You really should have someone with you for at least the first 24 hours. I stayed overnight and am glad I did. Most insurance companies will have it coded in as "outpatient/observation" up to 23 hours post surgery.

Re: Lap Hysterectomy: Does everyone stay overnight at the hospital?

I had my surgery in the am, and still had to stay overnight. Granted my surgery lasted 5 hours, but still. And my DH was home with me the first night and my mother ended up coming out the next day bc hubby had to work. I don't know what you're having your surgery for, but for mine I had endo removed at the same time, and I was pretty sore. Needed help with stairs, toilet, and some other basic things. Everyone is different though, that was just my experience. And I wasn't in greatest shape due to chronic illness. Hope your Dr has some answers for you.

I wanted to go home but they had me stay the night and I was glad they did cos just the ride home the next day wiped me out totally.

YES! They made me stay on liquid diet til lunch the next day and then they gave me spaghetti.....BEST. SPAGHETTI. EVER!!!! lol. I'm sure it really wasn't all that good but after not having anything solid for over 24 hours it sure tasted good...

Re: Lap Hysterectomy: Does everyone stay overnight at the hospital?

I had a Lap/Vaginal hysterectomy, and was in the hospital for three days- but to me only the second day was necessary, the third I woke up wanting to go home. I only chimed in because it reminded me of my first meal- the most delicious open-faced turkey sandwich ever.
Hee hee.

Re: Lap Hysterectomy: Does everyone stay overnight at the hospital?

My Dr says I have to stay overnight after my LAVH. My surgery is scheduled first that morning but Dr is unsure how long it will take as I have so much going on. My insurance is being a pain with the 23 hour observation thing tho. I guess they think it's normal to check out at 5:30am??? I WANT my DH with me for at least the first couple of days home. Don't want to risk my recovery because I want to be independent. Best of luck to you!! (Hugs)
PS. Now I want pudding!! LOL

I was kept overnight but only because I live 3 hours from the hospital the procedure was done at. I honestly wish they would have kept me one more night.

Re: Lap Hysterectomy: Does everyone stay overnight at the hospital?

I had to stay 23 hours after my surgery. My surgery was at 7a.m. and I was released around 10:30 - 11 a.m. the next day. My time didn't start until I was actually in a bed in my room. Hope all goes well for you Colosue.

Re: Lap Hysterectomy: Does everyone stay overnight at the hospital?

Thanks, everyone! I think I have pretty simple case of large fibroids. That's really the only thing--crime scene periods (this last one has lasted for four months until my doc gave me progesterone to stop the bleeding) and back pain and an enormous uterus. No endo or anything else. I'm keeping my ovaries. I'm otherwise very healthy and strong...no other health issues. I will meet with my doc next week, but I am still thinking I'll get to go home around 9pm (surgery a 3pm)--unless complications. Thanks again!

Re: Lap Hysterectomy: Does everyone stay overnight at the hospital?

I have to stay over-night and it's the first time I have had to do that with Laproscopic surgery usually I'm sent home same day. Maybe it's my weight? I will be in observation for one night so probably most likely.
It sounds like you will bounce back no problem with being in good shape and all. Best of luck!

Re: Lap Hysterectomy: Does everyone stay overnight at the hospital?

Had a davinci total 8 wks ago. I stayed overnight because it takes me a while to overcome anesthesia, plus out of surgery I got sick from it. I'm glad I stayed although I got hardly any rest due to the roommate I was put in with at the hospital. I'd have a neighbor or someone on standby to call if you need help getting up, getting food, etc.
